Yes but is it such an unreasonable assumption that if kids are doing well in their exams, they have been taught? They're taught the answers to the questions. There's a big difference between that (parrot-fashion) and being taught to think, to explore, to reason and to use logic.

Make parents responsible for their own little brats. As soon as the parents wise up to the fact that they have to take some responsibility, I'm sure they'll start pulling their 'little angels' in line ![>:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/angry.png) Yes, I acknowledge that in the short-term this will cause problems, but if you want a long-term fix you've gotta do something drastic, otherwise the rot'll continue and undermine all other efforts. How do you do that? Was the woman jailed for not stopping her kids playing truant the way to go?! Difficult if the parents are useless too to reverse the damage... ![:-/](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/undecided.png)

I just hate the way that everyone seems to judge teenagers on the minority (probably majority soon though). I want to become a teacher, but with the amount of paperwork and the behavior of kids that I have to have lessons with (in English they use their phones, sit around talking and my teacher doesn't care. In the computer room they do sod all, it's probably because my teacher's so bad ![:-/](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/undecided.png) ) it's putting me off. Plus my mum's trying to put me off it. She says I have more ability than that. ![:-/](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/undecided.png) I am the first generation, Fathers side to not become a teacher. I saw my him come home most evenings complaining that the kids did not want to learn and giving him loads of trouble. The problem is that unlike the commercial world you have to deal with them, you can't sack them. My Father go upset because he had lots to give and they didn't want to know. My mother however taught in a fee paying school, so whilst you had trouble - she had the bonus of dealing with parents who wanted their children to get on So if you get a nice school you'll be OK. However my advise would be get a training job for a large firm where you just roll out presentations and you have an attentive audience I'm going to my old Primary School for work experience if that helps... ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

Mrs H is right, Parents should be means tested - before they reproduce and given an aptitude test.

Yes but is it such an unreasonable assumption that if kids are doing well in their exams, they have been taught? I think the issue is whether a) the exams are of a decent standard (presumption against) and b) whether the way in which teaching is now done is suited to purpose (presumption against) Don't know the answer to that. Are the exams harder now or easier ? 'O' Levels in my day. In my three years of upper school, the exams - at least in mine and my classmates' perspective - got noticably easier (based on mock exams given with old papers). Across the entire class, there was a noticable trend of improvement - granted, practice would've helped somewhat, but an increase of 2 grades (i.e. C -> A) in something like a third of cases, and a single grade in most others, solely down to practice? I don't think so ![:-/](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/undecided.png)

Mrs H is right, Parents should be means tested - before they reproduce and given an aptitude test. Quoth Terry Pratchett, "Parents should be forced to pass a written exam first, not just the practical."

I run a Junior Football Team under 11's and you want to hear some of the parents on a Sunday morning.
Pit language I can tell you. What hope for those young lads if they hear it from the parents?

As an expert on daytime tele for the past 3 months i can officially announce.............. its absolute wank and it gets worse as the day goes on. The people responsible for cash in the attic, that blonde woman who is on every bloody programme on bbc in a morning, loose women, doctors, endless repeats of murder she wrote and diagnosis murder should be taken out and buried up to the neck and left to the evil marmosets ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)

Don't know the answer to that. Are the exams harder now or easier ? 'O' Levels in my day. Well in social science terms (sorry) it is the norm to believe that exams are getting easier. But the simple answer is compare a past paper for say O-Level Chemistry with the GCSE one I sat (and that was 10 years ago!) and you could tell which is harder... let alone now... ![:-/](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/undecided.png)

Not bad as I got 5 o/l and 3 a/l

I give up on this!!! ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) We all seem to be equally hand-wringing and convinced that society is going to hell in a handbasket. Now I'm tempted to think the same, but I'm also reminded that people have believed such things for millennia... ![:-/](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/undecided.png)
