Ok Jules tell me now there isn't something wrong with British schools.... There are so much many restictions on what teachers can and can't do in schools these days and kids are becoming more savvy about what they can get away with that it leads to this general apathy. Teachers know they can't get through to kids without some control. And in that I'm not suggesting we bring back the birch! Well I agree there is a lack of discipline it seems - but what can you do? And likewise I don't suggest we start beating kids to inspire obedience through fear! Kids seem to be increasingly cocky, I don't know why that is... waay too confident, I wouldn't have been as disrespectful as half the little brats you see wandering around shouting abuse at adults etc. So like I said - what is the solution? I'm not pretending I have one...

H is right .
Too much pressure on Headteachers and teachers nowadays to get results.
Not enough emphasis on teaching the kids

I'm not pretending I have one... Make parents responsible for their own little brats. As soon as the parents wise up to the fact that they have to take some responsibility, I'm sure they'll start pulling their 'little angels' in line Yes, I acknowledge that in the short-term this will cause problems, but if you want a long-term fix you've gotta do something drastic, otherwise the rot'll continue and undermine all other efforts.

I'm not pretending I have one... I don't honestly know. Some kids just don't respect authority figures these days. In fact there isn't a great deal of respect anywhere at the moment. We're increasingly a society that thinks about numero uno. What is the answer when supposed preventative measures like ASBO's are just worn like a badge of honour?

I look at my younger sister's work now and it's a fucking joke - parrot-fashion teaching to attain good results. She actually got given a detention for disagreeing with a teacher! (No, really - "Are you saying I'm wrong? Right, detention!")

Ask your elder generation what the answer is.
Lot more respect way back when.

Too much pressure on Headteachers and teachers nowadays to get results. Not enough emphasis on teaching the kids Yes but is it such an unreasonable assumption that if kids are doing well in their exams, they have been taught? I think the issue is whether a) the exams are of a decent standard (presumption against) and b) whether the way in which teaching is now done is suited to purpose (presumption against)

Or we could just neuter parents who don't pass a parenting test! lol

Hannah, when I was young the word was 'innit' whenever I said that with a bit of a south London twang. Mum, sorry Mother always threatened me with elocution lessons. I was sent and I'm grateful Both my parents are teachers! I just hate the way that everyone seems to judge teenagers on the minority (probably majority soon though). I want to become a teacher, but with the amount of paperwork and the behavior of kids that I have to have lessons with (in English they use their phones, sit around talking and my teacher doesn't care. In the computer room they do sod all, it's probably because my teacher's so bad ) it's putting me off. Plus my mum's trying to put me off it. She says I have more ability than that. I am the first generation, Fathers side to not become a teacher. I saw my him come home most evenings complaining that the kids did not want to learn and giving him loads of trouble. The problem is that unlike the commercial world you have to deal with them, you can't sack them. My Father go upset because he had lots to give and they didn't want to know. My mother however taught in a fee paying school, so whilst you had trouble - she had the bonus of dealing with parents who wanted their children to get on So if you get a nice school you'll be OK. However my advise would be get a training job for a large firm where you just roll out presentations and you have an attentive audience

Are the exams harder now or easier ? 'O' Levels in my day.
