Wolves are slugging it out with Rangers for the services of Burnley striker Kyle Lafferty.
Molineux chief Mick McCarthy has already had one bid of £2.25m plus Stephen Elliott for the Northern Ireland international rejected.
He is now reported to be prepared to up the stakes by throwing Darren Potter into the equation as well.
His hand appears to have been forced by the Scottish giants, who are believed to have offered £2.5m plus attacking midfielder Alan Gow in exchange for the Clarets striker. The Turf Moor club are thought to be demanding £4m.
McCarthy admits it has been hard going so far in the transfer market this summer.
He said: “It’s like spinning plates at the moment for all of us. How many deals have been done so far? Hardly any. You might see that so-and-so has signed but a lot of the time it’s just signing a new contract. That’s all that’s gone on.
“There will be a lot of people at the European Championships who are in the shop window and will be waiting to see what happens with their careers. Then it kind of starts filtering down through from there.
“People aren’t prepared to pay wages through the summer which is understandable. We will have scouts at the Euros maybe having a look at one or two and we will watch on the telly but we have not got any specific targets there.
“I have not a figure in mind as to how many players I want. I have spoken to a couple of managers and they have got targets like us but are waiting to see if they can do any business.
“It’s always like that at this time of year, it’s difficult.”

Agree with you. Don't want any players thinking they're bigger than the club they play for, as Lafferty seems to think with Burnley.

There's that, and the fact he's fooking useless. 5 goals despite being played as a winger. 6feet4, still only 20 ..... I'd say there's something in there to be moulded, but not when he's got his attitude issues. Will be a good player though. Just not someone who I'd want to see at Wolves if he thinks too much of himself.

Unconfirmed report: Burnley accept 2.5 M Plus Elliott for striker Kyle Lafferty. Burnley manager Owen Coyle has finally accepted an offer for Kyle Lafferty believed to be £2.5m plus Stephen Elliott from Wolves. The Northern Ireland international handed in his transfer request 10 days ago and Burnley had been hoping that Lafferty would change his mind. But on Monday night Coyle had to concede defeat and accept the offer from Wolves leaving the way clear for Lafferty to leave the Clarets. Wolves manager Mick McCarthy is hoping to open negotiations over personnel terms with the forward as early as Wednesday morning in a bid to push through the move. Rangers are believed to still be interested in the 20-year-old and he hasn't ruled out a move to Ibrox telling Sunday Life: "I'm aware of Wolves interest and I treat it as an honour that they want to buy me. Barnsley boss Simon Davey has claimed that all the talk of a move for Brain Howard is just speculation after Wolves were linked. Their boss Mick McCarthy is the latest manager to be linked with a move for the attacking midfielder.
McCarthy is keen to add to his squad this summer and Howard has caught they eye with Barnsley over the past campaign leading to him being valued at £10m by club owner Patrick Cryne. Wolves are the latest in a long line of clubs being linked with the player but Barnsley boss Simon Davey recently claimed all the talk of Howard moving was just rumours. "There is no news and we've had no enquires," he told the Yorkshire Evening Post. "There's been a lot of speculation, but that's all it is.

Just not someone who I'd want to see at Wolves if he thinks too much of himself. 10 goals in 3 seasons, not good enough for neither a striker nor a winger, it looks like we're going to sign him as he's been seen checking into a Wolverhampton hotel this morning, i'd never boo one of our players and will back him while he's here, however my own personal opinion is that it yet more of SMs money that Mick is pissing away on never gonna bes. He'll be gone by Christmas when we're 12th.

Wolves have stepped up their efforts to sign Peterborough striker Aaron McLean – as they prepare to admit defeat in their pursuit of Burnley forward Kyle Lafferty.
Posh have admitted they had turned down a £1m bid from Wolves for McLean, who scored 33 goals in their League Two promotion push last season.
Lafferty is expected to join Rangers, who have topped Wolves’ £2.5m player exchange offer with a £3m cash deal, with a player and lucrative friendly thrown in.
That is believed to signal the end on any increase on their bid for Lafferty.
Wolves are instead expected to return with an improved offer this week for 25-year-old McLean, who is a former Grays team-mate of Michael Kightly.
Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson, a former Wolves midfielder, said: “Wolves have made a bid, but we dismissed it out of hand.
“For a start it was nowhere near enough, but we are not interested in selling any of our better players and we have no need to anyway.
“There has been a lot of speculation about Aaron, but this is the only offer we have had.
“Aaron is fully aware of what’s going on and he’s happy with the way we’ve dealt with things.
“Wolves may come back to us, but I seriously doubt they could tempt us to sell.”
Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey said: “Aaron is one of a number of players we are looking at at the moment.”
McLean has been a huge hit since his £150,000 move from Grays in January 2007.
After hitting four goals in nine games on loan for Posh, the Hammersmith-born striker scored 32 in 52 League matches, 29 of which came last season.
Previously, the 5ft 8ins striker scored 23 in 42 for Grays, eight in 49 for Aldershot and two in five starts for his first club Leyton Orient.
Any arrival of McLean would leave boss Mick McCarthy with a logjam of strikers.
Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, Andy Keogh and Stephen Ward also vying for places, with transfer-listed pair Freddy Eastwood and Jay Bothroyd still on the staff.
McLean is believed to be one of up to six new signings planned by McCarthy this summer, with at least one central defender and Derby midfielder David Jones among them.

Wolves remain in the hunt for Derby midfielder David Jones – despite alleged interest from Stoke.
A fee of £1m had been agreed for the 23-year-old, only for the deal to fall through. Jones failed to agree personal terms, according to Rams boss Paul Jewell.
But Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey is confident an agreement can be struck and is hopeful the club can complete a deal soon.
Derby chairman of football Adam Pearson said: “I think David has got one or two irons in the fire.
“He has got to decide where he wants to play his football and what package he wants to play under.
“We agreed a fee with Wolves but it’s the player’s prerogative where he wants to play and we completely respect that.”
