I think the setting up the NHS and Welfare State would be well and truly beyond him or his peers. Well that would mean having to do something for others and not just progressing their own careers. And the public would have to give a lot of thought to something and actually vote to pay some money for a service, which in the utterly sef centred, instant gratification, gimme gimme gimme society of today would not go down well. In the end we have probably got the politicians that most people deserve. Noone can be bothered to devote any time or trouble to political thought. They want it presented to them in a glossy one liner, accompanied by a cheesy smile. It's a good job Hitler isn't around now, because we'd lose!

Well said! On this we are agreed. On the subject of Michael Tonge on the other hand............... Why thank you ........ I always struggle to contain my socialist opinions!! .... Tonge is rubbish though!! ;D But as long as the team keeps winning I think he'll keep his shirt, as Blackwell wisely doesn't seem to like chopping and changing too much (except for cup games) ;D

I think the setting up the NHS and Welfare State would be well and truly beyond him or his peers. U must be joking those r socialists ideas they'll never happen in the US and we only got the NHS and welfare because 'old Labour' were socialists. Meanwhile New Labour is busying privatizing the NHS as we speak I was replying to Mrs H's post, but couldn't type quick enough so your's appeared in-between!

One massive irony about democracy over here for me at the moment is the green issue. All the parties are trying to look environmental to win votes, yet the very fact they have to face an electorate at least every 5 years gets in the way of them doing anything more than superficial. In a selfish country they're never going to make any radical moves to solve the problem such as making solar panels or wind turbines on houses mandatory, or hiking up flight taxes to stop the the excess flying started by Ryanair and Easyjet, or make serious regulations about packaging in supermarkets. If they do these stuff they'll lose the next election as the electorate only care about the short term, and that for me sums up why we may as well accept global warming now. We can do our little things like turn lights off, not leaving things on stand by and all the rest, but we're in the minority if we really care. This planet stands no chance as the majority of people just want more for themselves in the short term and do not care. To wrap this mess up entirely, it's pretty much cheaper to drive privately around than it is to get public transport because of privatization to what should be services instead of profit making organizations.
This short term mentality explains why all political parties are now practically the same in the centre. More right wing politics will result in a massive drop in standards of public services which will only lose votes in the short term, whilst more left wing politics will inevitably involved higher taxes which will result in the responsible party losing the next election. This problem exists in every democracy in the world, and makes me feel rather helpless when I think about problems in the world. However the thing with democracy is that despite it's weaknesses all tried alternatives have been even worse, so we have no choice but to stick with it.
For me greed is the most destructive evil in this world and is the cause of all this.

I disagree, URZZZ - the current government have come up with plenty of unpopular measures in the name of "going green," with what I can only assume is total disregard for their popularity or utter stupidity because of the impact it's having.
The difference is, they've chosen to undertake measures that raise extra money but without any actual effect (i.e. making people take up greener habits), and without investing that extra money into greener technologies etc. I personally dislike the idea of raising taxes on flights, because we're already insanely overtaxed on them compared to the rest of the world as it is, and I've yet to see any proof that the revenue generated will go into - for instance - funding research into greener technologies.
I'd be happier paying the extra tax if the money went where the name suggests it should. Until then, Nulayber, the Tories, the Lib Dems and all the rest can keep their grubby fingers out of my pockets.

I'm intrigued that a lot of Hilary Clinton supporters have now said they're going to back the Republican John McCain instead of Democrat Obama. Does this go to prove that American politics isn't about party politics but about the individual or dare I say there are some that just don't want to see a black man as president? It's not easy being Black in America.......... or in Obama's case 1/2 Black !!! I think alot of the Hillary supporters are a bunch of idiots anyway, go ahead & throw your votes away you liberal bastards. It really comes down to who you think will do the best job, alot of people are concerned over the vagueness of Obama when it comes to the issues. Plus he doesn't have alot of experience in politics, which can either be bad or good.

alot of people are concerned over the vagueness of Obama when it comes to the issues. Plus he doesn't have alot of experience in politics, which can either be bad or good. I thought Obama's recent speech was very good, actually, and said a lot of what politicians in the US have been afraid to say for a long time. And if we wanna talk about inexperience; what about McCain's running mate? She's been in the senate for one year, IIRC - and I also understand she's being investigated on an ethics probe? Kind of ruins his 'inexperience' card...
