Does that mean Ster should 'face' the same punishment for the same crime.. somewhere down the line? No, because Sterland saw the error of his ways and shaved it off - he didnt go on Live TV blatantly sporting a 'Monster Beard'! Its as simple as that - sod the politics, that will only cause arguments - the beard case is a complete no-brainer! Ah but perhaps he never had the chance to go on tv and have his beard broadcasted to the waiting world..

He wouldnt have done that though - he was embarrased about showing it to us on the RBNO night out, hence why he shaved! We can let him off with a slap on the wrist and a piss take on the RBNO pages!! ;D

Though I don't agree with the death penalty i find it hard really to be opposed to this decision. Whatever people's opinions on the war and on the fairness of the trial, the man was a tyrant and a killer, responsible for countless attrocities and deserves whats coming to him. Hopefully he won't be seen as a martyr but it is a shame that he is being executed before he has been tried for all the charges against him (I think thats the case anyway ). If there was an option to bring back the death penalty Ash, i'd be straight in the 'for' camp....IMO the country needs it back And why do you think that? It's a proven fact that having a death penalty doesn't reduce crime. In America there are more people than ever on death row, proof that it is not a deterrent. Very few murders for example are premeditated so the criminal doesn't even consider the consequences. Also what about when the wrong person is convicted? Any civilised society has no place executing its criminals. Most people only want it for revenge reasons which is wrong. Its barbaric and makes society no better than the criminal. People jump on the death penalty band wagon without considering the real issues first.

Have to say I agree with CAV - I always worry about what would happen if they got the wrong person, and a civilised nation would not murder criminals, no matter what they have done. However, life in prison should not be any easy ride for those who have committed serious crimes - and I think at the moment it probably is.

Life in prison should mean life until the criminal dies. If we need to build more prisons then so be it.

I agree, Billy, Cav..
I mean, the death penalty is so hyprocritical in a way. Say you get sentanced to death because you murdered someone, you are going to be murdered by the state. Is the person who carries out the execution any less of a murderer?

The moral high ground should have been taken. The new Iraqi authorities killed him in an equally barbaric way, what's the regime replaced by? Hypocrisy of the highest.

I agree with Billy, CAV etc etc but not for 'facial; hair crimes' - thats what the death penalty is designed for!!

I believe in an eye for an eye and always will. If one of my family members were murdered at any time, id seek the exact punishment and am not the only one i'm sure.

Same here but the issue is (for me) more that yes, a life for a life but the way in which that happens shouldn't be the death penalty.

From my point of view, if i lost someone i loved to a murderer who got life imprisonment, i wouldn't be happy until they died. A) Killers dont ever seem to get life, they get out early and B) prison's no longer treat them like the scum they are, they still seem to get 'luxuries'....my idea of going to prison is you suffer and i dont think prisoners (esp murderers do) hense why it doesnt seem enough to put them off commiting the crime....

Excuse me!!! I DID have a shave for the 606 do! Besides, I may have a goatee half the year when it gets cold but I didn't kill thousands of people! (even though I was really drunk last night!) I think he deserved to die for 'Crimes Against facial Hair' - Thats all i have to say on the matter! Does that mean Ster should 'face' the same punishment for the same crime.. somewhere down the line?

That can be fixed by less 'luxuries' in prison and if a murderer, rapist or whatever is given life, they should be throw in jail til they die.

I see Gres went within a whisker of keeping this thread good humoured As for the remainder, yes, I am sure that were someone to take the life of a loved one then I too would have the urge to seek vengeance, irrespective of the consequences. That is why it is right and proper that I do not have the right to do so. It defends me and it defends society. As for Saddam, the real punishment should be dealt to those who supported, armed, excused and supported him - but that is altogether more tricky than stringing him up and considering the matter closed.
