Personally, I do not think he should be executed. He probably didn't get a fair trial, however a life of hard labour would be more a fitting punishment in my eyes.
Still.............................
Saddam Hussein was still in American custody as news reports said a defence lawyer had claimed the deposed Iraqi leader was to be executed on Saturday.
On Thursday, Saddam's half brothers visited him in his Baghdad jail cell, Iraqi officials said.
The meeting with his relatives could indicate the deposed leader's execution was approaching, but he must also be transferred to Iraqi custody first - something officials said had yet to take place.
Iraq's prime minister said those who opposed the execution of Saddam were insulting the honour of his dead victims. "Our respect for human rights requires us to execute him, and there will be no review or delay in carrying out the sentence," Prime Minister Nouri Maliki said in comments released by his office.
"Those who reject the execution of Saddam are insulting the souls of the martyrs of Iraq," Maliki's office quoted him as saying. He made the remarks in a meeting with families of people who died during Saddam's rule.
On Tuesday, an Iraqi appeals court upheld Saddam's death sentence for the killing of 148 people who were detained after an attempt to assassinate him in the northern Iraqi city of Dujail in 1982. The court said the former president should be hanged within 30 days.
A member of Saddam's defence team, Badee Izzat Aref, said another of Saddam's lawyers told him Saddam's half-brothers visited him on Thursday.
"Upon his (Saddam's) request, his two half brothers were brought to him and spent some time in his cell," Aref told The Associated Press in a telephone call from Dubai. "Saddam handed his brothers his personal belongings," Aref said.
A senior commander at the Iraqi defence ministry also confirmed the meeting, and said that Saddam handed over his will to one of his half-brothers.
The White House was preparing for Saddam's execution as early as this weekend, based on information that US officials in Baghdad were receiving from the Iraqi government, a senior administration official said in Washington.

Bung him in a prison full of his enemies, let them have their way with him, when he can't take it anymore, bung him solitary confinement and keep circualting it until the fucker dies.
The death penalty is the easy way out- he doesn't deserve it. He's responsible for the deaths of thousands, let him face the music.

Way I look at it, what will it solve killing him. Let him suffer in prison, getting but fucked etc.,
However will Blair and Bush ever be held accountable for going to war without reason, I don't think so!

They knew there wasn't any WOMD before they went in. Blairs sinking quickly anyway, Bush will follow, although I agree they should be punished.

Though I don't agree with the death penalty i find it hard really to be opposed to this decision. Whatever people's opinions on the war and on the fairness of the trial, the man was a tyrant and a killer, responsible for countless attrocities and deserves whats coming to him. Hopefully he won't be seen as a martyr but it is a shame that he is being executed before he has been tried for all the charges against him (I think thats the case anyway ).

I think if it is to be used it should only ever be a life for a life. When I was in Aus earlier in the year, several Aussies were put on death row in Indonesia for drug smuggling. Now, they should have been aware of the punishment for the crime but I think thats to much for it. I don't have a problem with it for clear cut things but what puts me against it, even for crimes like murder, homicide or whatever is the element of doubt. There are probably numerous occasions where people have been executed for crimes they didn't commit and well death is the ultimate injustice!

Oh yeah, i see your point and its really the ultimate argument against it (Derek Bentley being a classic example) I just think it might install a bit more fear factor into the country and make those who commit these crimes think again. I dont like it when they throw the likes of Ian Huntley and Roy Whiting in jail when they have been found as guilty as you can be....why waste money and prison space on deadbeats that you could exterminate within 5 minuites

I just think it might install a bit more fear factor into the country and make those who commit these crimes think again. Thats what a lot of people think. Yet, if you look at countries where they have the death penalty, the murder rate is usually higher than in this country, so whether or not it actually works is debateable. Plus, as Geofox said (i think) the death penalty is irreversible, so it makes miscarriages of justice even worse than they are now. I think the only way it could be brought back is if the criteria for conviction is changed from 'beyond reasonable doubt', to much nearer certainty, and clearer evidence needed in murder cases where a death penalty could be passed.
