A cheerful headline in my local paper. It was only a small piece, about 4 pages in, but still there. Now, not one for trusting the media or anything, but it's hardly the most settling of things to be reading while hearing about the 'Ipswich ripper' (I honestly don't think that it can be one person. They might've been caught by now ) and drinking my orange squash. Could also be said to be; 'pointing out the obvious'. Just how many news correspondants are needed in Ipswich anyway? I don't think there'll be room to move for journalists when it comes to the Ipswich vs Leeds match And another thing, can't the news just report the news and not come up with various theories? Overall though, it's pretty damn unnerving and for some reason, I'm feeling slightly scared. The media, it seems, is also stirring it all up to freak everyone in the county (maybe even country) out. And to me, it's working.

I'm sure as Hannah says it's more than one person! he's been ripped off by one of these girls or caught something unpleasant.
You can see that the Police are not really geared up for this sort of things!

morning, this guy is a propper fruit loop. Yeah. I hope they're caught soon, because otherwise Ipswich will be a ghost town.

They're not, it's said Suffolk Police are least likely to be able to deal with a major incident, but to be honest the biggest incident that's happened in Suffolk recently is the raids on the Post Offices. Nothing like this seems to have ever happened and I don't think even the best police force in the country could really have dealt with it. They've drafted in help from Norfolk and I think either Cambridgeshire or Essex.

Found the news quite sad yesteday - when one of the girls dads was on the telly: Poor man didn't know what she was doing for a living - so he has to deal with that and that his daughter has been murdered. Really felt for him and she had kids!

Really felt for him and she had kids! The third woman that was found had a 5 year old son And one of the girl's that's missing knew the dangers and also gave an interview to Look East. But now she's probably going to be named as one of the two bodies found near Levington. There are some really sick people in this world.

It's awfull, they only work the streets to pay for their drug addiction. Dealers at this level really should be dealt with!

Its really frightening how many bodies have been found in such a short space of time. Its unimaginable what makes people do things like this, such a sad world we live in at times. Not nice for the people of Ipswich either, did think about you Han when all this broke out. The town must have a real cloud over it right now

If this is not sorted soon, New Years etc., will be really dead in the town centre. I mean who's going to want to go out

The pub's and shop's are empty in the evenings and I'm wondering how it'll affect the football matches, the cinema and the other places that keep the town running. But also, I don't think that the police force are used to all this media attention. They're updating them on everything. My brother's (he home sick as well) just read me out a piece from the national newspaper, saying that it seems that the media might be treating this as a case off Midsomer Murders and seem to have forgotten that these girls are someone's daughters, sisters, mothers in some cases and they're just labelling them like they mean absolutely nothing.

I'm amazed at some of the media reaction to this. I read one article where they had an 'expert' trying to build up a profile of the killer, and... well, it was mind-blowing - and I mean mind-blowingly crap "We're probably looking at a white male, in his late 20's, 30's or 40's" "It could be that he's a christian extremist who believes he's purging the world of evil" "He might have had previous bad experiences with women" "He's probably mentally disturbed" No fucking shit sherlock - hands up who else considered all those possibilities within a couple of minutes' thought? Of course, after throwing in a few sensationalist remarks, he then goes on to say that "trying to build a profile up is useless at the moment, because we don't have enough information, and it will probably be forensic evidence rather than profiling that leads to his capture. In the few previous cases like this, the killers have all been markedly different, so we can't even go on that." Great. So not only are you trying to whip up a fear-frenzy, but you then subtly admit that you have no factual basis for any of the claims you've made. Way to tell the news responsibly, BBC

I know, it's terrible! It's been going on for about a month or so now and I don't think anyone in the county (or region, as it was also on Look East) expected it to turn into this. Also, the media are assuming that it's just one man. They could be female for all they know It's just far too early to assume!

My guess personally is that it would be one man, but there's no certainty of it by any stretch - it's only a guess. It could just as easily be a couple of mentally unstable women whose husbands both used to visit prostitutes that somehow feel every prostitute is to blame - pure conjecture, but equally as valid as every other theory right now, especially since there's not been any sexual assaults with the murders. The media has certainly got a duty to alert people to this sort of thing, but they should also be responsible about how they go about it - sensationalism and fearmongering sells, but at what cost? (See also bird flu, global warming, immigration...)

It just seems that one man doing it, although it's been happening over a month or so. It's just the bodies that have been found in 5 days. Yeah, they have to sensationalise every bit of news to shock everyone.
