Yesterday saw round five of the qualification matches for South Africa 2010.
The two biggest surprises saw the two giants of South America stumble & fall respectively.
A strong Brazilian outfit were beaten 2-0 by Paraguay with a goal from Santa Cruz & despite the sending off of Dario Veron.
Argentina despite having 74% posession against Ecuador fell to a sucker punch & another horrific mistake by 'I Am Useless' Pato & were rescued only by an injury time strike from Rodrigo Palacio.
Basile like Dunga has copped immense flak from the lack of direction on the field & tactics considering the immense level of talent available to him.
Bolivia the group whipping boys were comfortably beaten by Chile both goals from Gary Medel of Colo Colo.
Uruguay despite taking an early lead from Diego Lugano & pressurising their visitors Venuzuela were pegged to a 1-1 draw by an improving Venuzuelam outfit.
In Peru Columbia scored early but were pegged back by a fine Marino strike & survived some close calls late on to remain unbeaten in the group & move into third in qualification.
The big match this week is of course Brazil v Argentina with both sides having a lot to prove.
In my own opinion Basile should move over for a coach liek Bianchi or Simeone someone aware of the modern game.

pisses me off the esay qualification the south american teams get compared to european teams. The top 4 qualify and even the 5th team gets another chance against the oceanic group winners

I hate the timing of that, if I wasn't up for work at 5am then I'd be watching it!

I'm staying up to watch . Apparently Messi & Riquleme have fallen out as well. Basile cant even get the team to be in harmony. Yesterday Uruguay thrashed Peru 6-0 with Diego Forlan grabbing a hat trick. Regarding COYS point on WC qualification Africa really has a tough time of it roughly a 13% chance of qualifying . Compared to Europe 25% CONACAF 8% CONMEBOL 40-50% & Asia 9% However when you look at who is in the Asia & CONACAF federations its hardly surprising they only get this amount of qualifying spots. CONMEBOL deserves that level insofar considering what they bring to the WC in skill & flair & based on their history. Uruguay a country of 4M can legitimately claim 4 world cups considering the 24 & 28 Olympics were played by full strength teams & both Uruguay & Argentina did not bother with any of the European held tourneys until 1966. Personally Basile out. Has not got a clue about the game today & someone like Simeone in with Batigol or Tocalli as assistant.

Yeah, the timing is a bitch. Luckily I'm off work so I can stay up & watch it Though I'm sure Ovech would do a better match report than mine! Isn't Veron recalled btw???

Yeah, the timing is a bitch. Luckily I'm off work so I can stay up & watch it Though I'm sure Ovech would do a better match report than mine! Isn't Veron recalled btw??? Veron has pulled himself out of the squad GB. When you have someone like Gago who moves the ball with great rapidity its amazing how Veron is selected over him. Riquelme was not even fit on Sunday & yet was picked. Leeds fans might recall this name Jonathan Bottinelli part of the planed link up between San Lorenzo & the Whites. Hes terribly error prone yet looks to have got the nod for the centre back berth ahead of Gonzalo Rodriguez who has played superbly for Villareal after 2 CL injuries & former best young defender in Europe in 2006 is beyond belief. Basile has a great set of young players available yet persists with the deadwood. Again Pato (absolutely useless) instead of Casillas in the making Carizzo . Mascherano who was immense against Ecuador when required is also likely to be missing through injury to be replaced by Battaglia from Boca. Honestly Basile has not got a clue about strategy. Heinze who can barely run is still being played when there are far better replacements in Insua who has the benefit of being able to run. Cruz ahead of Lisandro Lopez top scorer in Portugual & a target for many clubs across Europe & Cavenaghi L1 striker of the year & a natural finisher . The mind boggles if you are a fan of Argentina.

Ah right, was there anything wrong with him or did he just not want to play?? See Thuram pulled out of playing last night cos his head wasn't right or something Basile is a proper old school type manager, I agree that Argentina need to get shot if they want to progress. Agree with ESR and yourself Ovech in so much that Simeone would be a decent appointment if he was to be approached. Hope its a high quality match tonight! It sucks balls when you stay up just to watch utter shit.

He just pulled out saying he did not want to play. Time to call it quits I think along with Zanetti(to be fair both had decent games)
To be fair he did stop a near bust up between the new & old guard in Riquleme & Messi,
As for sucking balls the Argentine press (never known for not being reticent in coming forward) described him thus.
He cocked up in 94 & he'll cock it up again the big difference being that in 94 there was only really Redondo , Batistuta who were world class compared to now when there are half a dozen.
My Argentine side would be: -----------------------------Carizzo------------------------------- ---------Garay------Dimichelis--------Gonzalo----------------- Zabaleta-------------Mascherano--------------Maxi---------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Messi------------------------------------------------ Tevez----- ------------------Aguero---------Cavenaghi-------------------
or the more traditional: ------------------------------Carizzo----------------------------- Zabaleta----------Garay--------Dimichelis--------Insua---- ------------------------Mascherano---------------------------- -------------------------------------Gago----------------------- ----------------------Valeri--------------------Maxi------------- ------------------Messi---------------Cavenaghi---------------
Subs could inc. Saviola Tevez Gonzalo Maidana Romero/Ustari Biglia Banega plus several others like Lopez Higuain Escudero di Santo di Maria Fazio all kids with immense talent.

Quick question: is the altitude ban still being enforced? I remember games being restricted to under 1500m, but was that scrapped in the end following the protests over it or not?

Can't deny they have been good servants for their country! Zanetti's been at Inter for as long as I can remember aswell.
Well that angle the Argie press are coming from is an understandable one really. If only they could get a good keeper then who knows ;D
