That's my point GB.. You would think that market values have to have a reverse in order to make the whole process economically viable, yet we don't seem to have the 'footballers production line' that our less well off neighbours seem to have. Without the feeder system into first team football at the highest level, be it Spain England or Germany or even the South American countries, then that is going to have a diverse effect on our National team. If the talented youngsters that are kicking a sock wrapped in gaffer tape round the streets of Rio are going to get spotted by the likes of the web that Arsenal and Chelski cast around the globe, then the boys that are playing at Dagenham and Solihull etc are going to get missed.. Nice..... You bring up another good point there S4E. It all starts at a grass roots level. Take the French for example, they have Clairefontaine, a National Youth Training Centre, where all the up & coming footballers of tomorrow train. We have nothing that really compares well to how they do things IMO. If we want to compete we have to invest, simple as. Other countries that you name, ie. Argentina, have promising young players rolling of the 'production line' we have few & far between. The contrast is there for everyone to see, we just do not make the effort it seems. For a country that is steeped with all this football history we aren't doing a lot to improve it. Investment in the youth is the way forward. Otherwise we will be picking the stars of the future here & there and mixing them up, with no real plan. That my bit!

Some players take it to the extreme though, Pele advertising Viagra? He must have been hard up! Surely there is a level of honour in putting your name/face to something?? Honour is down to the individual though GB. True!

New DiscussionOk, following on from a fairly successful one last week, we are changing the topic to: Foreigners in Football. How do you feel they have effected our game? Should we restrict the amount a team can field? Your thoughts ladies & gentlemen are appreciated... It is Affected, GB... can't say the standards of English have been pulled up! (teach) With regard the foreign players, I see the dilemma whilst believing that the standard and style of play has been hauled up in this country. I totally see the counter arguments, but where do you draw the line on foreign players - George Best? Would we have been without Ardiles, Henry, Cantona? By limiting numbers we reduce the pool and reduce the competition for places and thereby reduce the standards. I think that the foreign player argument is too easy and a little soft - it evades the issues with funding at grassroots, quality of training facilities, skills levels of development personnel and what goes on at school. I blame the teachers. Give me a detention PASTIE Lol, I agree with your comments, and have also added a post mentioning grass roots level before I read this.

I agree with most, if not all of the points people have made about this. The brilliant foreign players add a lot of flair and beauty (with the way they play..not their looks..except maybe Henry ) to the game in England. Arsenal have hardly any British players, but they are a good team to watch. However, I do believe all these foreigners don't let our British players come through. I don't particularly like Spurs, but I think that they should be commended because of them buying good British talent....although Leeds did this a few years back ( ) with Smith, Woody, Bowyer, Robbo etc (and we didnt buy most of them - our youth system was/is cracking.) Keep the replies coming..! There you go IHBA!

Great topic there Hulse.
I think all players who cheat by whatever means, be it diving/feigning injury whatever, should be forced to endure a Luton match ;D
Seriously tho, this goes back to the previous topic - Foreigners.
Before the huge influx of foreigners in the English leagues, there was little of this to our game, since their arrival, not only do they do it themselves, but they've influenced the British players aswell.
I'd like it if referee's were more strict, they should make a point and send a signal to players like those in question; i.e. Robben, Drogba, C. Ronaldo, Deco and the rest of the Portuguese team - that they cannot get away with such antics. But - what can they do? Give em a fine, thats a slap on the wrists. Ban?? Whats that gonna teach em?
For me, I can't see any real way of getting it out of the game, it's always been there, and will continue to be there.
These type of players command no respect for me, players who play for the pure love of the beautiful game make it what is is WITHOUT CHEATING. Good example - Zizou.

lots of yellow cards will sort it out. if we ever get the video ref most of us want then it'll be easier to clamp down. If after the game it is clear from footage that a player has dived give him a yellow to his name, which will soon add up to a suspension.

I agree. The only answer is retrospective video evidence. THe problem will be with inconsistent availability of video replays with lower league clubs, but stamp it out at the top and the rest will follow. It does also matter, as there are kids everywhere wearing Ronaldo Man U shirts (he seems to appeal to the U-14s) and if that is a role model then he needs sorting. I already have seen kids take a dive when I'm playing football with them. Naturally I stamp them in the bollocks once they're down.
I blame the teachers.
