He's been in the musical spotlight now for nearly 20 years now and has to be without doubt the most inventive talent this country's produced in decades.
In terms of their album back catalogue, stunning singles, reinvention and innovation, Blur are very probably the finest British band of their generation. They've released 7 albums and not one of them is a dud - albeit The Great Escape is a bit patchy - and unlike infamous rivals Oasis who have spent the last 10 years functioning as a pale parody of their original selves, every new Blur release has marked somewhat of a departure from their previous work.
Such a legacy would be enough for nearly anyone, but not Damon Albarn. He's since progressed to form Gorillaz who redefined the nature of the musical landscape and release two albums (the second being one of the best records of the 00's), then followed that with the acclaimed The Good, The Bad & The Queen side-project.
Next up he scores a Chinese Opera entitled 'Monkey : Journey To The West', using a combination of electronica, traditional Chinese instruments and Mandarin vocals.......and even that's great!!
So, your opinions on his best albums, singles etc........

Well I'm from the BritPop generation so Blur are pretty high up on the list for me. Girls and Boys reminds me of just being throughly happy. I could go anywhere do anything. It reminds me of my brother's 21st.
Oh and I fancied the arse off him as well ;D

Oh and I fancied the arse off him as well ;D Good to see the thread quickly tail off from the choice of a universally popular tune down to the lowest commmon denominator! ;D Does 'Modern Life Is Rubbish' not register in your young mind then? 'Sunday, Sunday' was the best tune ever at the time to have pogo-cum-scrum jig to! ;D

I have the album now. I did have it when it was first released no. It doesn't reasonate with me like the Girls & Boys era.

I wasn't around when The Beatles knocked about (really!) but I love Abbey Road! In fairness Parklife is the album that changed my musical life; prior to it's release I had more of a passing interest in music, maybe buying a CD a month, though as you know, things have rather changed over the last 14 years! ;D Been listening to a lot of Blur again recently and starting to question the unquestionable......not sure whether Parklife is my favourite album anymore! I really love 'Blur' too, and Beetlebum is possibly my favourite of all the singles!

So, your opinions on his best albums, singles etc........ I don't like Damon Albarn, or his Blur or Gorillaz vehicles. He's gone from making music for cheery cockney barrow boy to making music for down trodden melancholic cockney barrow boys. I sincerely hope he's is eaten by bears, ...... preferably polar bears in a salt factory. He appears to have gone on Paul Simon-esque musical exploration of late, joining musicians from around the world to make bad noise. I would suggest he may be on a musical journey right now, and I'm guessing his final destination may be somewhere up his own bottom!! The Chinese Opera thingy ...... hmmm Damon Allbran, Chinese music and opera ...... I think I'll adopt the duck & cover position when it's released!!

He has some merit, and a number of his works are firmly lodged in my musical consciousness (aka human jukebox). I agree with Kieran as regards him getting involved with some Chinese operatic malarkey! Oh, in terms of naming tunes, I've found myself thinking of Charmless Man in relation to a number of people over the years, you can't beat the adrenalin of Song 2, Tender was a beautiful little song, and I really liked "The Universal" then and still now. I just wish he hadn't had such an annoying voice!

I liked Blur in the days of There's No Other Way but didn't like the Parklife era. Then they got good again. I was always an Oasis fan rather than Blur.
And i too miss the brit pop era, were good days and nights.

I'm not sure what my opinion of Damon Albarn is. I do like Blur and I like The Good, The Bad and The Queen. The Monkey thing is getting on my nerves - but that's only because we showed the play of it at the Playhouse for FOUR WEEKS(!), so I'm quite sick of it now. Damon seems a bit of an arse in the interviews I've seen him in, especially in the documentary 'Live Forever'.

Hmmmm, bit of a mixed response! ;D Kieran, I'm shocked! Especially as like me you have a liking for Bjork, a woman who'll happily play the spoons, the washboard and the rib cage of an elk if a tune demands it! ;D 'Tender' is indeed a very fine song Jules, although I must say that 'Charmless Man' must surely hold little merit other than as an associative medium. That album was a bit ropey for me, albeit 'Country House' was still way better than 'Roll With It'! I loved Oasis in 1994 and 1995 Chopper, although the second album did seem like a sell out and I still detest 'She's Electric' with a passion......as for ever album since......how about something, anything fresh? Tom, what can I say? I really didn't expect anything else! Jen, Albarn was a self-confessed arse during the Britpop era, the battle of the bands etc turned him into a comedy mockney who functioned as a 'rent-a-quote' type of bloke. But then again, he realised his mistake and returned with 'Blur'..........what a record! I can also remember him reacting to the first play of 'Roll With It' on Radio 1. He mockingly referred to Oasis as the new Status Quo, turfing out the same old stuff. I think he might've had a point.
