Yes... Utter gash film. I'm never letting my girlfriend pick what we see at the cinema again. I dumped my last gf after she insisted we went to see Alvin and the Chipmunks at the cinema! That was after a slew of other rubbish films. Who's gonna go see Beverley Hills Chihuahua with you now though Tom?

Who's gonna go see Beverley Hills Chihuahua with you now though Tom? It's a lonely road we walk mate, but I'll live ;D Saw 'Little Miss Sunshine' last night, rather enjoyed it. Steve Carell excelled. Didn't twig that the sullen son was the mad preacher from 'There Will Be Blood' though! Got the Joy Division film to watch the rest of tonight (not Control as one of my friends thought).

Oh right, let me know how you find the JD film. I rented before Xmas but was so busy I just took a copy to watch later and forgot all about it. Haven't seen LMS in a while but didn't twig it the other way around! Dunno why though, he has the same gormless look throughout. ;D Can't say I'm big on Steve Carrell although he was good in it. Then again I've witnessed a tolerable Jim Carrey performance once before, so sonthing should really surprise me......

Eden Lake
From the director of 'The Descent' a gripping mix of horror with a slice of social commentary.
Nasty surprises sprig up at every turn and like Wolf Creek some of the scenes are quite disturbing.
Kelly Reilly (Pride and Prejudice) plays her part as Jenny to a tee out with her fiancee Steve (Fassbender ) ona weekend trip to a reclaimed gravel pit now renamed Eden Lake.
Unfortunately they confront a group of yobbish chavs and thats when the horror starts. Unpredictable from start to end its a visceral adventure.
There's plenty of social commentary on the roles of parenting, taking vengeance and pertinent to many situations which do occur on a frequent basis today and which in some cases do turn to tragedy.
A tight script and on a limited budget as with The Descent a thoroughly 'enjoyable ' film. Like Wind Chill instead of pure gore as with the slew of Saw HOSTEL films there is a level of characterization and atmosphere which make it stand out.
Anyone else watched this ?
8/10

Anyone else watched this ? 8/10 Saw it last weekend! I think that horror is probably the hardest genre in which to make a bona-fide classic film; there's a fairly limited scope for original concepts, and if you can't offer something groundbreaking in that respect then either the script, atmosphere and direction has to be truly exceptional, or boundaries have pushed back and taboos broken. I thought that Eden Lake took the latter route and did so exceptionally well. It is a brave film maker who chooses to pursue a story in which children are killed; especially when one is done so at the hands of an adult and the other is murdered in such a sickening way. Anyone can do gore, but that doesn't really serve any purpose but to titillate a teen audience. Extreme horror is the sort that stays with you and makes for a very uncomfortable and thought provoking viewing experience. Eden Lake is the first such horror film to achieve that in a number of years. 8/10 from me too.

Slumdog Millionaire - good film, not the full happy happy film i expected, until the end. 7.5/10
the curious case of benjamin button - if read the book or seen mork and mindy, film makes perfect sense, highly enjoyable without really noticing that it was 166 mins long. probably will win oscar for best film. 8/10

Catch Me If You Can
Catch Me if You Can is a comedy-drama crime film loosely based on the life of Frank Abagnale Jr., who, before his 19th birthday, successfully conned millions of dollars by posing as a Pan American World Airways pilot, a Georgia doctor and Louisiana prosecutor. His primary modus operandi was cheque forgery, becoming so skillful that the FBI eventually turned to him for help.
This film came very highly-rated, and I must admit I was disappointed. The acting and direction were very good, but the film itself just felt kind of weak. There were some moments that were genuinely engrossing, but others that were far less so.
Overall... it passed the time okay, but I felt largely indifferent to it at the end.

The Departed
Hmmm I quite enjoyed this but I wouldn't put it in Scorcese's highest echelon of works with King of Comedy, Goodfellas and Taxi Driver.
More on a par with Casino tbh.

Slumdog Millionaire
I was worried I was going to hate this, but it is a film with magical quality to it. It captures both the beauty and desperate poverty of India and that the sense of falling through the cracks in rapidly modernising society, and the lengths people will go to push themselves forward in a world like that. The are some fantastic laugh and out loud moments, but they are always contrasted by the intentions of others become clear or muddied by their own actions. It's the best film I've seen for ages.
9.5/10

SLEEPERS
Mid 90's film based on a true story about a group of kids abused in a child penetentiary in America and their subsequent revenge on the guards who abused them.
It stars Brad Pitt, Robert Di Niro, Kevin Bacon, Minnie Driver and that bloke out of Lost Boys!
I cant believe i missed this til now - really enjoyed it, though was quite disturbed by the abuse scenes. They were not graphic at all, just the thought of what actually going on was enough.
very cleverly put together, and some good performances from the big names.
7.8 out of 10 - well worth a watch!

I saw Magicians. It was ok, not as bad as some make out, but I did slam my Peep Show box set into the DVD player for a while afterwards.

I couldn't believe how poor it was - in comparison the leap to the big screen of 'On The Buses' seemed a triumphant zenith in cinematic history. I would say it was by far the worst film I saw last year........ ......though I did see Rambo and St. Trinians in 2008 too.

It certainly wasn't anything to write home about though. I was going to see a film on Saturday evening but went to the cinema off the cuff and couldn't find anything either at a good time or that I wanted to watch!

That Benjamin Button film really does not appeal to me at all by the way, it sounds like a Forrest Gump for the Noughties

But this is when the cream of Hollywood releases are cynically released for our pre-Oscar delectation! That said, every decent reviewer I've read or heard has said 'Benjamin Button' is a bit poor and I suppose you have to be in a certain frame of mind for 'Revolutionary Road' and 'Doubt'. 'Slumdog' and 'The Wrestler' seem the best bets at the moment...... Not seen much worth shouting about on DVD recently either though I still have 'Somers Town' to see, and now have 'The Escapist' on the way which both promise better.
