PRINCE CASPIAN
Excellent transfer of book to film, almost word for word, but the childrens acting is still an issue. Equally, the decision to portray the Telmeraines as of hispanic descent...
6.5

The Day The Earth Stood Still
A remake of the 1951 classic sci-fi film about an alien visitor and his giant robot counterpart who visit Earth. Starring Keanu Reeves I was really looking forward to this but came away a bit disappointed. As with all films nowadays the special effects are very good but the film has too many slow parts and that kid is sooo annoying.
6/10

Equally, the decision to portray the Telmeraines as of hispanic descent... 6.5I saw that last week, and i'd give it a 6 the acting by the kids is so wooden it actually makes me laugh! ;D Hancock - actually quite enjoyed this in a 'switch off and lose all concept of reality' type way! Will Smith doing what he does best. 7/10The Commitments - have seen this film loads of times, but had forgotten just how brilliant it is! 9/10

The SpiritJust got back from seeing this and it was pretty good. If you didnt like Sin City then dont bother cos it is in exactly the same vein. Comic book violence and some laught out moments, if it wasnt for Samuel L Jackson the film would get less marks although Eva Mendes looks awesome and Scarlett Johansson in a Nazi uniform also looks stunning 6.5/10

Oliver! (1968) The classic edition, starring Ron Moody (Fagin), Jack Wild (the Artful Dodger), Mark Lester (Oliver), Harry Secombe (Mr Bumble) and Oliver Reed (Bill Sykes), is without doubt the best of the many editions. It was nominated for just about every award going on its release, and with good reason. I shouldn't need to tell you the story by now. If you don't know it, find yourself a pen/pencil, hold it in one hand, and do the Star Trek Vulcan hand thing with the other. Now, balance the pencil in the gap between your fingers, and close them together so they hold it in place. Now, with your free hand, squeeze the Vulcan-hand fingers together hard. Hurts, doesn't it? That's your punishment for not knowing the first thing about this classic Now that that's done with, on with the plaudits. The film, frankly, is brilliant. The story is superb (but then it's Charles Dickens; what more do you need?), the music fantastic, the choreography breathtaking at times, and the acting absolutely top notch. The Artful Dodger and Fagin in particular steal the show with performances that haven't been bettered before or since (Jack Wild and Ron Moody absolutely defined the characters), Oliver is portrayed brilliantly as the naively sweet and innocent workhouse orphan, Shani Wallis makes a great Nancy, and Bill Sykes is the perfect villain; a character you genuinely come to despise. The film is over forty years old but still justifiably finds its way onto the telly at least every eighteen months, and shows absolutely no sign of aging. If you're currently nursing some sore fingers, go and buy the DVD and watch it. You're missing out on an absolute treat. 9/10

Twilight - 4/10 Yawnnnnnnnnnnnnnn. And the sad thing is, most fans reckon the film's better than the book. I've not seen the film, but having read the book, I'm inclined to agree anyway.

I saw some of Outlaw too. Cynical, tasteless rubbish. Been a while since I have turned a film off before the end, but this was it.

SLUMDOG MILLIONAIREDon't be fooled by the frothy posters - a marketing decision made no doubt to maximise it's appeal to the public - Danny Boyle's latest film maybe be something of an urban fairytale, but it's far grittier than you'd imagine. The tale begins in the grim confines of an iterrogation room in Mumbai police station. Here we find Jamal (Dev Patel) being tortured as a couple of officers try to force a confession from him - he's found himself one question away from the big prize on the Indian version of 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire', but nobody believes he could've got this far without cheating. Eventually the officers relent and ask Jamal to explain how he's been able to progress to this stage, and so they sit down and he begins to explain, revealing his life story in the process. Although very funny at times, the film seems more akin to works like 'City Of God' for large parts of the running time with beatings, shootings and even an intentional blinding of a child. And yet despite all this, the film at its core remains a love story as Jamal loses touch with childhood sweetheart Latika, only to re-find her and then lose her, only to then relentlessly search for her again - his gameshow appearance is merely a desperate effort on his part to entice her to start a new life with him. Although ostensibly it's an unconventional film, Slumdog Millionaire does retreat to the safe cliches of a typical Hollywood romance in the closing act. But then again the story certainly earned its right to such an ending, and the resolution delivers the big emotional pay-off demanded. Great performances, kinetic direction, beautiful storytelling and a Bollywood dance number to end. A very worthy - and different - Oscar contender. 9/10
