I want to see 'Slumdog' but would have had to wait 2 hours. I have seen The Wrestler and it was excellent.

SLEEPERS Mid 90's film based on a true story about a group of kids abused in a child penetentiary in America and their subsequent revenge on the guards who abused them. It stars Brad Pitt, Robert Di Niro, Kevin Bacon, Minnie Driver and that bloke out of Lost Boys! I cant believe i missed this til now - really enjoyed it, though was quite disturbed by the abuse scenes. They were not graphic at all, just the thought of what actually going on was enough. very cleverly put together, and some good performances from the big names. 7.8 out of 10 - well worth a watch! classic in my top ten films.....makes me cry evertyime Right up there in my favourites as well. Absolutely fantastic film.

The Dead Pool
The last in the Dirty Harry series of crime thrillers and if you take it at face value it's not actually that bad. Clint Eastwood looks everyone of his 58 years but still manages to portray the anti hero in inimitable style.
The plot is very silly (unhinged killer starts bumping off celebrities listed in a 'Dead Pool' game) but it's somehow hard to actively dislike.
Features an early appearance from Jim 'James' Carrey as a junkie rock star and a cameo from a fresh faced Guns N Roses.
6.5/10

Slumdog Millionaire
Well a rare example of a movie living up to the hype. I was thoroughly gripped by this.

The Day The Earth Stood Still.
The day I nearly died of boredom. Not a patch on the original. Connelly tedious, Reeves mediocre plus Will Smiths whiny brat (any nepotism involved there ?).
A few metal scarabs enlivened proceedings for a millisecond or so but boy what a dreadful production.
The end is as anti-climactic as I've seen.
3/10 (for the relatively weak special effects)

The Europeans
Glossy period drama based on Henry James novel of the same name. If you liked the old Brideshead Revisited this should be right uop your street transplanted as it is though to New England and as with Scorceses Age Of Innocence feauring Old Worlde views on the rising wealth of the 'upper class' Americans.
Addy is superb as the crusty puritan Mr.Wentworth and Lee Remick (surely one of the most, if not most beautiful woman to grace films) excels as Eugenia the 'European'.
Perhaps a bit wordy for some and sub plots between various lovers that are not realised but magnificently filmed as with all Merchant Ivory productions with a great eye to detail that warrants a re-visit as with say 'Room With A View'.
7/10

GRAN TORINO
Clint Eastwood directs and stars in this film, which is about a grumpy, racist war veteran coming to terms with the loss of his wife and having to live in a 'mong' neighbourhood (not mong as in double decker foreheards - mong as in people from laos/thailand/burma etc)
One of his neighbours gets involved in a local gang and his initiation is to steal Eastwoods 1972 Ford Gran Torino. Eastwood catches him in the act and the film develops around Eastwoods relationship with the family next door and his wars against the local gangs.
It is a TERRIFIC film. I was expecting a 'Dirty Harry' type movie but this was far from the case. Dont get me wrong, Eastwoods character is as hard as nails, but it isnt a shoot em up at all - its funny in places, the story is well written and there is a fantastic ending that i wasnt expecting at all.
8/10 from me - definately worth going to see....Eastwood is just brilliant

Marley & Me.
7/10.
Tbh the film is average. There wasn't enough chemistry between some of the characters and the film jumps forward too quickly. There wasn't enough about Marley - cutest dog ever! Everyone 'awwww-ed' when Marley as a puppy was on screen. But yeh, there was too much abour John Grogan's job and it was all a bit crammed; the humour was very good though, some great jokes and Marley was just comedy and cuteness rolled into one. I'd strongly recommend the book as it is much better and provides a more complete picture.
Knew what was gonna happen at the end but it still made me cry!! All in all, enjoyable and one for the whole family.

I've broadened your appreciation of Anime and presented you with copies of some of the very finest examples of contemporary world and independent cinema.......so you watch this! It's a Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson vehicle where the pair are upstaged by a canine; seriously, how good could it be?!?

THE HAPPENING
Nothing did!
How to turn a potentially interesting concept into a ponderously tiresome heap of excrement, all in 90 excrutiatingly long minutes. Are people still employing M. Night. Shyamalan merely to see if the quality of his movies will ever bottom out?
1/10

Sister Act
After witnessing a murder, Reno-based lounge singer Delores van Cartier is forced to hide from the mob in the last place they'd expect to find her - a quiet convent. While there, she transforms the lives of the resident nuns, bringing soul to their choir and taking their work out into the streets.
Brilliant film - a lot of fun and very entertaining, featuring a stellar performance from Whoopi Goldberg as Delores and many laugh-out-loud quips throughout.
7.5/10

Sahara
Scouring the ocean depths for treasure-laden shipwrecks is business as usual for thrill-seeking underwater adventurer Dirk (played by Matthew McConaughey) and his wisecracking buddy Al (Steve Zahn). But when these two cross paths with the beautiful WHO doctor Eva Rojas (Penelope Cruz), they find themselves on the ultimate treasure hunt. Soon, the three are in for the ride of their lives as they cross the blistering North African terrain, pitting their skills against ruthless enemies bent on world destruction.
The best way to sum the film up, in a nutshell, is Indiana Jones meets James Bond, with added Hollywood testosterone and an even greater suspension of disbelief. If you're looking for complex plots, deep ideas, challenging moral decisions and a film that gives you something to take away from it, you're wasting your time here. If you want fun, action and humour, though, this film delivers time and time again.
If I were to judge the film on its technical qualities, it's well-directed, the soundtrack is spot-on and the acting is perfect for the script, but the story veers between weak and ridiculous at times, and there were occasions where even I couldn't suspend my disbelief enough, so much so that it'd only warrant a 6.5/10 - I mean, really, who'd shoot a helicopter out of the sky with a 150yr-old cannon?. However, the film is so supremely entertaining that I have to give it an 8/10 - I mean, really, who'd shoot a helicopter out of the sky with a 150yr-old cannon? ;D
A film great for watching on your own, with the family, or with a group of drunken friends. Put it on your rental list ready for any time you just want to unwind!
