listen to queen's night at the opera. It's got some of the most imaginative production ever, and they're a remarkably versatile band. For sheer entertainment value tehy are up there with the best.

(btw I agree with your comment generally - classic!)

what is your fav bands OF ALL TIME the chilis rule all i'm afraid I like the chilis, and its true that they're a very individual band, but they're a bit flat at times. Virtually any chilis song could be virtually any other chilis song and the lyrics are by and large awful. Plus its only the last couple albums that really work as a whole. If you take under the bridge, give it away, suck my kiss, & shikimikeniko (or however it's spelt) away the earlier stuff is proper dross. Not consistant or varied enough to be the best band ever - but damn good at what they do.

(btw I agree with your comment generally - classic!) arrangement is part of production, surely?!? You know as soon as you hear a queen song that you are listening to queen, even though they play in so many different styles. No band before queen had used so many layers of production. On a night at the opera they had to record two parts on single tracks because teh desk they were using didn't have enough tracks to cope with them!

I don't think you can ever say that one band are the best ever. There are those who changed music history ie beatles, Nirvana, Velvet Underground, the Stones etc who were revolutionary, but it turns out not that good compared to today's standards. There are bands like Radiohead & Bjork who have consistantly turned out amazing albums which are all very different. There's Portishead & RATM who've invented their own genre. There are bands like Abba, Queen & Wacko Jacko who've changed the face of music through their production. One of my favourites are Pearl Jam, who've lasted a heck of a long time, and have adapted their music to the situation the band is in. Or Muse who, like queen, are versatile and distinctive - and technically very capable. It's impossible to narrow it down. I could give you a list of my favourite bands, but that doesn't neccessarily mean they're the best. Sorry Stan I don't know. You?

I meant arrangement as part of the make-up of the music... but I'm starting to think you meant production as in producing the songs - which in essence is the same thing.... so ... I agree!!! So the answer to my question is Queen then?

Once again I seem to be of the same opinion as you (a bit scary this!)... but there's no one... I've gone on about it before - so shan't again, but definitely Pearl Jam, metallica, Jimi Hendrix, Nirvana, Pantera, (lots of heavy stuff), etc etc

You have to consider other bands like the Who, Zepplin, Sabbath etc who really started the whole heavy rock thing, but what about less popular bands like The Fall who've been around forever creating innovative music, that virtually no-one wants to listen to!
Then there are bands which were once innovative, and got boring.... even the Human league were original once!!!

The Chili Peppers are incredibly varied, possibly the most varied band out there. Not two songs are similar, every single song is different, has different themes going on with it. Lyrics aren't the Chili Peppers' strongest points but the lyrics are consistently quite good rather than other good bands that have some songs with woeful lyrics and some with very good lyrics. I could name loads of pairs of Chili Peppers' songs that are polar opposites but still musically outstanding and on a whole awesome to listen to. The Red Hots have something for everyone and everything for many people. Plus they keep getting better and I think without any real doubt hold the title as the best Funk-Rock band ever. Having being around for 23 years and more popular now than ever as well as being the biggest band on the planet for the last 7 years. In the future Red Hot Chili Peppers could well be considered as the greatest band by many more than just the current avid fans.

Dont get me wrong LL, i love the Chilis, but i agree with Shippers in that some of the B sides do sound similar! the lyrics they use do not seem to make any sense whatsoever! i partially agree with both of you!

I'm not saying they aren't good, but they're nowhere near the best ever! plus how many decent funk rock bands are there to beat?

funk rock. what a ridiculous marrying of tastes. funk is an abomination whereas rock is the heartbeat of our very beings. never should they meet again how dare you utter such a thing (can one type an utterence?) JJ! Funk is awesome. How can one diparage the mighty James Brown, or Tower of Power? True the 'disco' type funk is not acceptable behaviour, but real funk is something beautiful. And most importantly it makes girls dance - and that can't be a bad thing.
