CINEMA PARADISO When his mother makes a phonecall to Salvatroe, asking that he return home to the small town in which he grew up, nobody expects that after 30 years of absence, he will. But when he learns that Alfredo, the projectionist who he held a precious childhood friendship with, his thoughts inevitably return to his early days. A truly wonderful film that celebrates the meaning friendship, marrying it with a love of cinema. It is also a story that mourns the passing of the golden age of film, and the unstoppable tide of 'progress'; the village Salvatore returns to is a far less welcoming environment in many respects, than the one he left behind. Beautifully acted, shot and scored. I've already got my order placed for the remastered 'directors cut' dvd. 10/10 NO!!!!!!!!! DO NOT WATCH THE DIRECTORS CUT!!!!!!!! I watched this a couple of years ago as part of my Italian coursework (and then reviewed it in English - fuck knows how I got a first) and fell in love with this film. That weekend in the paper there was a free copy of the Directors Cut edition and I eagerly watched it. Ruined it. Removed so much of the mystery and magic, added about three quarters of an hour which devalued the film. Not that they didn't need to be there, but the explained a central characters motivations and made him look like a complete arsehole. Do not watch the directors cut, it ruins this film! But I agree with the review, 10 out of 10 for the normal version. 6 out of 10 for the extended.

Hmm, thanks for the warning mate. The edition I've ordered does have both cuts on though (so I won't be wasting my money if that is the case), and they have both been re-mastered (again), given a 5.1 remix, then there's also disc full of documentaries and also the soundtrack CD!!. Not bad, a 4-disc set for £12.99, especially as I've only got a newspaper freebie version of the original cut. Hannibal Rising - I was disappointed that they appeared to have missed out the bit where he attacked the Romans by going over the alps on elephants .............. in fact all references to the punic wars seemed to have been lost on the cutting room floor. However this is by the by, it was a reasonably entertaining yarn .......... and it explains where he got his churlish table manners from (which I'm not sure needed doing!!). 7/10

THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA
If you were to believe the hype this film is a biting satire that savagely attacks the fashion industry and those who work within it. In actual fact, The Devil Wears Prada is essentially just another serviceable fairytale-cum-morality fable for teenage girls.
The story focuses on Andy (Anne Hathaway), a supposedly frumpy (yeah right!!) girl who takes a job working for fashion magazine head and uber-bitch Miranda (Meryl Streep). Despite being mocked by those around her, she proves herself, has a make-over and her 'Prince Charming' sweeps her off her feet in Paris, but then guess what, she decides that the friends she has left behind are the most important thing in her life - original eh??
Both the stunning Anne Hathaway (the antithesis of frumpy, even in a plaid skirt), and Emily Blunt turn in good performances, although quite why Meryl Streep has been Oscar nominated for her role is something of a mystery to me; she seemingly only has to breath in a film these days to earn a nod from the Academy.
5/10

Hotel Rwanda
Set against the backdrop of the 1994 Rwandan genocide of the Tsutsi race, this African Schindlers List tells the true story of a Hutu hotel owner who sheltered over a thousand Tsutsi refugees from the rampaging Hutu militia. In order to keep the militia's out, he has to deal with corrupt army officials and the indifference of the West to his plight.
Make no mistake, this film preaches. It lets you know everything that the West failed to do and then some. There are moments when you see the script writer venting his fustration at the neglect shown in the face of genocide, the indifference shown by the UN and the Western leaders. However, this is one of the subjects that can be preached about, and the script writers fustration is justified coming out of these characters as they face neglect by the west and murder by their countrymen. There are genuinely touching moments as they pull together and try to understand the madness that has overcome the nation.
However, this is one of the only points where the film falls down. We have no idea about why the genocide is taking place, why the Tsutsi and the Hutu loathe each other. A couple of exchanges explain that the problem stems from the Belgian occupation, but that's all we're given, the film unwilling to tell us the deeper rooted problems.
Despite that, this is a sublime piece of cinema. Superb acting turns from the cast, especially Don Cheadle (not a sentance I ever though I'd write). Strongly recommended, although you may leave with a guilt complex by the end.
8/10

The Long Good Friday
Amazingly the first time I've seen this highly rated Brit gangster film, and I was not disappointed.
Bob Hoskins gives a dramatic tour de force as the increasingly paranoid gang leader Harold Shand who quickly and terrifyingly loses his grip on his crime empire in the space of a day. Once the biggest fish in the pond, he finds he is no match for the IRA as they confidently oust him, but not before he has blamed the wrong people and killed his right hand man (an early appearance from Derek 'Charlie out of Casualty' Thompson)
Also featuring early turns from Helen Mirren, Paul Barber and Pierce Brosnan as an IRA hitman, this film is driven by a sublime musical backdrop and atmospheric photography.
9/10

TAXI DRIVER See, I'd not seen this before but it was on Film 4 I think the other night. Now, I might well be missing somin here but I didn't think it was very good Admittedly, I missed the first few minutes, but unless anything happened which had a bearing n the rest of the plot, I just didn't think it was very good. Didn't like some of the acting, thought the story line was rushed, and was generally left feeling disappointed Although, I think I may have worked out where Trav got his MB name from? If anyone disagrees, (an dI'm sure they will) perhaps they could explain to me what the film is really about and whether I misunderstood it
