Those Glory Glory Days........on Film 4 last night !! Excellent film about 4 school girl Spurs fans in the 60's who idolised Danny Blanchflower. I suppose you have to be a Spur to fully appreciate it but then again its worth a look IMO if it gets on again. Bit of history in it as it is all set round the double winning season

THE PROPOSTION
A Nick Cave penned story of a man forced to choose between two brothers. When Charlie Burns (Guy Pearce) and his younger brother Mike, are caught by Captain Stanley (Ray Winstone) and his men during a seige, he is offered a proposition; upon his release he can choose to track down and kill his older brother, Arthur, a sadistic misanthrope, or flee and see his younger brother hung.
Very well shot, with the oppressive heat of the Australian outback vividly brought to screen (every actor is covered in flies, all the time). The film is a litle ponderous at times, although a savage and apt ending help to redeem things.
7/10

TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE - THE NEXT GENERATION
The third of the sequels to the original horror masterpiece. Having been none too impressed with the first sequel, starring Dennis Hopper, and reportedly by far the best, I would normally have given this one a wide berth. However, the opportunity to see Renee Zellweger in an early role as a 'scream queen' was too much of a curiosity to miss.
Essentially it was everything I expected; an absolutely astoundingly bad script riddled with plot holes, dire direction and hopeless acting. I just about managed to stifle a yawn during some of the most 'visceral' sequences. It was so bad, I honestly began to wonder if it was meant to be a spoof. Kim Henkel, who got the job of writing and directing the film, has unsuprisingly has never worked behind the camera again.
As for Renee, well she looked embarrassed to be there. The dialogue, the premise, everything about the movie was diabolical, hell the poor girl didn't even have a chance in the screaming stakes, afterall, nobody could scream like Marilyn Burns did in the original. On a brighter note, Matthew McConaughey played a member of the 'psycho' family, and at least managed to be slightly less nauseating than he is in most rom-coms.
A steaming pile of putrid excrement. Those people that elevated it's average rating on the iMDb to 2.5 should be shot!!

Yes, and he (she?) suddenly sprouted breasts!! I wished I'd been pissed watching it, I'd probably have been crying with laughter. Even the Friday the 13th sequels stand up in comparison!! Was that the one where they turned Leatherface into a tranny?

INSIDE MAN
A clever, intelligent thriller reminiscent of Dog Day Afternoon. What starts out as a bank robbery turns into a battle of wits between the police and the robbers. The film is designed so that your loyalties are never completely with one side or the other, and there are enough twists throughout the film to keep you entertained. Superb performances by Denzel Washington and Clive Owen make this a worthwhile way to spend your evening. 8/10

Watched my newly acquired copy of Dead Man's Shoes last night. Think I gave it 9 the first time I watched it, but it's got to go up to 10. Just amazing.

Oh and I watched Sexy Beast on C4. Not too bad, but meandered a little. Ben Kingsley was quite funny as the lunatic crime boss.

Indeed mate, it's just one of those that stays with you after the first time you see it. Paddy Considine is just outstanding, as he has been in other films I've seen him in. CHILDREN OF MEN
Thriller set in a dystopian London, in the year 2027. With the whole human population deemed infertile, mankind is facing extinction, and the news that the planet's youngest person has been killed, aged 18, is met with a profound sense of despair.
An ex-revolutionary, Theo (Clive Owen) is then abducted by a group working under directions of his ex-wife, and taken to a hideaway where an astonishing secret is revealed, and 8-month pregnant girl, Kee. Theo is entrusted with supervising Kee's safe passage through London, an ultimately to a safe sanctuary at sea, where the birth could potentially help scientists save the future of mankind.
Although intially rather slow, the momentum in the story builds markedly from around the mid-way point, and the final 45 minutes is absolutely gripping; at first thrilllng, then poignant and ultimately melancholic. Considering the relatively low budget, the sets are fantastic, they show a London changed rather subtlely by technological advances, but markedly more so by societal breakdown, and succeed completely in being utterly convincing.
Highly recommended.

Best British film within the genre since Get Carter, and there are far more than a few parallels between the two stories. CINEMA PARADISO
When his mother makes a phonecall to Salvatore, asking that he return home to the small town in which he grew up, nobody expects that after 30 years of absence, he will. But when he learns that Alfredo, the projectionist who he held a precious childhood friendship with has died, his thoughts inevitably return to his early days.
A truly wonderful film that celebrates the meaning friendship, marrying it with a love of cinema. It is also a story that mourns the passing of the golden age of film, and the unstoppable tide of 'progress'; the village Salvatore returns to is a far less welcoming environment in many respects, than the one he left behind. Beautifully acted, shot and scored. I've already got my order placed for the remastered 'directors cut' dvd.
10/10
