I can understand him getting abuse during matches, but I think it's a bit shitty when he (and his family!) get abuse and threats sometimes for weeks after a game. For fuck's sake people, let it go - it's only a game!

never liked Poll myself but last nights documentary on him was very good. It did make you feel sorry for him. Everybody makes mistakes at work and forgetting a yellow card was understandable in all the confusion. The players have to look at themselves as well with all the theatrics which were going on.
And it is only a game.
When you see his wife mother and kids crying over how he was treated you realise something is wrong.

Interesting insight into what it's like for a referee but I struggled to find sympathy for him too. He says he's not arrogant but rates himself as the best ref in the country and how he's had a fantastic record for most of his career (given his record is good) but I just got the impression he loves having power and decision making that can change whole seasons.
Yes football is a game and there are more important things in life but he just kinda dismissed football as 'just a game' in that it didn't seem to matter that much that it'd been his career for 25yrs+.

i think it is reported he is going to become a pundit I know mate, could be funny with the likes Ian Wright who speaks his mind and will fuck him off. But on the whole he's proved he does not understand the game. He'll be another Jimmy Fucking Hill

I felt sorry for him, for all the personal abuse him and his family got ............. but he was an awful referee, and I'm glad he's gone!! ............ and I wouldn't like to see him as a pundit, unless it's for ITV as I refuse to watch their coverage of football!!

However when you hear how his kids, wife and mother have all had grief. Then I did feel sorry for him and his family.

Having a go at him - or worse, his family, who have nothing to do with it - for weeks afterwards is another thing though, and not anything any ref (opr anyone else) should have to put up with. It's not like he cost the people abusing him their jobs or killed a family member or anything is it?
