Interesting insight into what it's like for a referee but I struggled to find sympathy for him too. He says he's not arrogant but rates himself as the best ref in the country and how he's had a fantastic record for most of his career (given his record is good) but I just got the impression he loves having power and decision making that can change whole seasons. Yes football is a game and there are more important things in life but he just kinda dismissed football as 'just a game' in that it didn't seem to matter that much that it'd been his career for 25yrs+. Before I assume the role as bad boy referee basher of the boards (catchy) I think that this post is spot on spoz - all sympathy to his family, all derision to those who take the dramas of a Saturday afternoon stadium out into the real world - but the way he strutted his stuff and positioned himself as the celebrity often above and beyond the quality of the game and impinged upon the entertainment we stump up cash for then he had to accept a degree of comeback. Protestations of innocence won't cut it completely. That said, I hope he enjoys a quiet life and that he disappears from the public eye. I suspect a career in the media being the controversial celebrity commentator is headed our way though.

Oh god. I hadnt thought of that. Just wait. See how sorry for him people are when his smug face is projected across our screens. People will be trading in their 52 inch flat screens for black and white portables the length and breadth of the land...

Maybe he'll disappear behind the commentators mike instead, and it'll just be the 5.1 Surround sound that'll have to go

Okay, every time I see this thread title, I get 'Sympathy for the Devil' playing in my head. Does that say something about Poll much?
