How come players like Zanetti and Veron have been re-called? They weren't in the world cup squad were they?

www.dailymotion.com/relevance/search/argentina%2Busa/video/x2eq07_argentina-4-usa-1-copa-america-2007Quick review of the goals. Milito screwed up again as expected. USA played very tight defence but the introduction of Aimar made things happen. As for Veron & Zanetti gw. Zanetti was a really glaring omission & a shocking one ,being passed over in favour of Lionel Scaloni . Veron was less unexpected. He's a surly character & it is only his great season with Estudiantes that saw him recalled. However last night his passing was poor he was walking round for most of the game & only had 1 great cross shot superbly tipped onto the bar by Keller. For Il Capitano already an Inter legend & a model professional(esp with his charity work) & the likes of Ayala & Crespo this is likely to be their very last tournament & they really want to win something . Paraguay will provide a very stern test.Columbia look all over the shop at the back. Salvador Cabanas got the other 2 goals in addition to Bayerns Santa Cruz. Goals are here(click on the relevant screen). www.dailymotion.com/videos/relevance/search/paraguay+/1

Watched both games on sky plus today and thought that Argentina were slightly disappointing. I no 4-1 sounds a bit of a walkover but USA gave it their best and Eddie Johnson did alright against your defence. Messi looked abit average and i didn't understand who was playing right wing?

I've only watched one of the games, the Brazil v Mexico one. That was a great game. The 1st 2 Mexico goals were amazing. Brazil just couldn't score.

This is one of the best tournaments in recent memory, the opening games have been excellent and the goals of the highest quality. Pity Brazil havent got their full team out, and Argentina look strong.

I no 4-1 sounds a bit of a walkover but USA gave it their best and Eddie Johnson did alright against your defence. Messi looked abit average and i didn't understand who was playing right wing? Well the US formations was 5-5-0 so it was bound to be tough. Basile kept patience & injected Aimar in & as the US tired the gaps became wider & wider. It was an odd formation at times. There was no recognised striker role with Crespo out on the right & left wing at times. Riquelme & Messi struggled to find a link up with Riquelme drifting between the sole forward & back four . With Messi being double even triple marked ,it would have made sense for the space created to have been used more wisely but Veron is far too slow . Okay the maxim is the ball is the fastest object on the pitch but you do need receivers of the ball ahead of you in open positions. This was not seen until Aimar started making his runs through & around the midfield while Veron hardly essayed one sprint. Milito is an awful player who makes Bramble look competent at times. Notice the spacing with Ayala on that goal & being caught many times in the midfield (no idea what he or I guess he was doing there to playing too deep). Tevez Aimar & Messi work well together playing at a high tempo so it remains to be seen whether Riquelme can adapt to this. He & Messi have got to sort out their roles. Messi was far better in the second half in a free role rather than playing down the one channel constantly. The US team is young & experimental but they hardly created anything apart from 1 going wide shot just after Verons strike. But they should edge Columbia but I expect Paraguay with Cardozo & Santa Cruz upfront to be too strong. Nice to see Demerit play Crespo well & as usual winning his share of headers.

Good summary, still don't understand how Crespo is in over the mighty Tevez Perhaps starting with a two proper wingers may give you more stability in the midfield and plus one of the strikers doesn't have to come back to fill the role. Agree Aimer did well and scored a great header, maybe he will push Veron out of the team? For me Riquelme was playing far to deep, he needs to be just behind the strikers, he is to good at finding openings and holes in the defence to be playing that deep. Tbh your defence had not much to do, apart from the goal which was very poor defending. One to watch for me is Eddie Johnson from USA, love watching him run, he is so quick! Who have you got next?

Ustari had a standout season in 2005-6 along with Aguero & Biglia for Independiente. Barcelona were so impressed that they sent along their general manager to arrange a first choice option on the player. However in this seasons Clausura & Apertura whilst at times brilliant he's been dreadful in other games. Partly to expected given his age but maybe enough for Barca to wait another season before hauling him over. Carizzo was outstanding for a River side bereft of ideas & traditional style. So much so AC Milan are trying to sign him. At least both these keepers can catch crosses ,are extremely agile (esp.Ustari )are excellent shop stoppers & unusually for Argentine keepers control their defence & command their area. Ustari however missed out on the squad purely through a finger injury being replaced by Agustin Orion of the champions San Lorenzo. You certainly know your stuff! I would also love to see Carizzo given the jersey. I have seem him on a number of occasions and he is one top, top keeper. I was actually having this discussion with my dad before the tournament kicked-off. We both agreed that they should give Carizzo a chance. He's been heavily linked to a number of top european sides with Real Madrid the latest club to be linked. Ustari is another I have had great pleasure in seeing play live, and again, a real prospect that has often been linked with a move to Europe. As you say, he hasn't been that great just recently, but I do feel that being in the spotlight somewhat didn't help his progress and he's sort of taken a step back rather than forward. I wasn't too impressed with Argentina, I expected more tbh. I think they showed in the last half an hour the kind of football we expect from them, flowing, and attacking. Tevez put in a good shift when he came on, and I have spoken to many Argentineans who would rather see him start ahead of Crespo. I'm not too sure myself. I like Crespo as he's a goal predator and the type of player that fits in well with the Argentine system. Another player that I absolutly love is Rodrigo Palacio. The boy has had his fair share of injuries down the years, but I really can't wait to see him playing for Barcelona (it's a done deal). Blessed with pace, intelligence and an eye for goal he'd fit in perfectly at the Camp Nou. How comes you know so much about football in Argentina?

Hallo IWEDFM. I guess you're from the blue & yellow half of Buenos Aires ? Been following the Albicelestes from 1986. Read regular reports on whats going on in the Apertura (translations of Clarin) & Libertadores (magnificent from Boca again) & watching the games when I can on cable & catch the friendlies & under age matches too. I've just been watching the u20 game against the Czechs ( wonderful style again like the seniors but disappointing result in some ways) & looking forward to seeing the u17s in Korea (Oliva,Meza,Trecarichi Laurito ,Buonnanotte & co). Though Barca have had first option on Palacio for a long time I don't know if it would be for him to play second fiddle there as we saw with Maxi Lopez & Saviola. There are many player changes in the offing though & Eto'o & Giuly may well be leaving the Nou Camp. Trecarichi is also linked with Barca. Atletico are trying to recruit Riquelme. Any idea if Cardozo will be leaving ? Uruguay kept their chances alive with a 1-0 win over Bolivia courtesy of Vicente Sanchez while the hosts Venuzuela top the group after dfeating Peru 2-0 with goals from Arismendi & Chicherro. Chau for now.

Watched both games last night, the first was very disappointing, i was expecting Uruguay to come right out at Bolivia but they didn't at all and there was hardly a shot on target other than the goal and the last minute push by Bolivia. The second was much better, a sending off and a disallowed goal in the first 15 minutes give an exciting start to it and two top class goals from Venezuela gave them a deserved win. From the first group it looks like Bolivia are now gone.

Robinho scored a hat-trick as defending champions Brazil bounced back from an opening defeat by Mexico to beat Chile 3-0 in the Copa America on Sunday.
The Real Madrid striker converted a controversial penalty amid furious Chile protests in the 36th minute and added two more in the last 10 minutes.
The opener arrived when Gilberto's cross from the left was comfortably held by goalkeeper Claudio Bravo but the referee gave a penalty, apparently for pushing.
Robinho calmly scored with a low shot which just eluded Bravo's outstretched hand.
Chile came out fighting after half-time and striker Humberto Suazo was close from a free-kick, while Suazo delayed his shot after being put clean through, allowing Brazil to clear.
Jorge Valdivia wasted another chance from close range before Robinho sealed victory in the 84th minute when he latched onto Vagner Love's pass and chipped over Bravo.
Three minutes later, he collected the ball 40 metres from goal, dribbled past two defenders and scored with a shot into the corner.
The result leaves both teams with three points from two games in Group B.
Brazil coach Dunga: "The game was difficult because Chile defended a lot, but at the end we were able to secure the triumph.
"We played competitive football. It was a tough game, they played with two lines of four and we didn't have any space until they came out in the second half."
Chile coach Nelson Acosta: "We played a good game but we lost Miguel Riffo and Rodrigo Melendez to injury and that forced us to use two substitutions.
"Brazil scored at the end of the match when our defence was completely open. It's very easy to score when your opponents are tired and chasing the game."

Mexico have made it through to the quarter-finals after victory over Ecuador put them three points clear at the top of the their group, having earned a maximum six points from their two matches.
Hugo Sanchez's Mexico went ahead in the 22nd minute when Rafeal Marquez broke through from midfield, slipped a precise pass through the centre of the Ecuadorian defence and Nery Castillo slotted home.
And they almost went in at the break with a two-goal lead but Hurtado cleared a Fernando Arce shot off the line.
But in the 80th minute, Cuauhtemoc Blanco floated over a superb cross from the right wing and Omar Bravo bulleted home a diving header to kill the game off.
Edison Mendez pulled a goal back for Ecuador five minutes from the end, but it proved scant consolation.
Mexico coach Hugo Sanchez: "We dream about winning the Copa, but we need to take things slowly - qualifying for the quarter-finals was just the first step.
"Just because we beat Brazil we shouldn't be considered the tournament favourites."
Ecuador coach Luis Fernando Suarez: "Yes, it's a failure and I'm not thinking of resigning for the moment."

Chau for now. Boca fanatic mate! I'm currently at the bottom of a three year waiting list for a season ticket Re: Palacio - I was thinking the same not so long ago, that the move could turn out to be a bad one especially now they have Henry on board. I would be well and truly gutted for the boy if he did end up in the same way as Maxi Lopez and Javier Saviola. He's 25 so at an age where first team football should be his priority, and at Barca, I think it's very unlikely he'll be given that. Riquelme is my favourite player in the world, I love him. He's far too good for South American football imo. He won Boca the Libertadores on his own. From what I understand, Boca are doing their best to keep him for a further 6 months. Infact, they have even set up a special phone line for supporters where all call costs will go towards paying to keep him. Here's to a comfortable win over Colombia tonight!!!

To gw there were difficulties with the manager that led to the loss of form much as at Barca plus some domestic difficulties. I was horrified when Pekerman made the change in the QF.It just invited the Germans on & the whole pack of cards collapsed. Furthemore due to Pato's injury Messi remained stuck on the bench. To IWEDFM.Love Macri's telephone idea. Guess funds wil be sunk into the new Bombonera ? Tonight. Paraguay 3-1 USA. Superb opener involving a drag back & back heel for Barreto to burst into the boc & finish. Clark scored a good equaliser. Then a dreadful back pass error led to Benfica's new acquisition Cardozo finishing calmly. Salvador Cabanas scored with a free kick. Argentina 4-2 Columbia. Pato is officially the worst keeper in international football. However it was G.Milito who played Perea onside for a cheeky finish. Just before Crespo's header had bounced on the line off the crossbar. Messi was fouled in the box for Crespo to equalise but he pulled up after taking the spot kick & was subbed by D.Milito. This is why Saviola should have been in the team.D.Milito was anonymous & Tevez was stuck on the bench. Riquelme made it two from a Zanetti cross & made it three with a free kick. The second half was controlled by Argentina withou any real penetration or attempt to do so. But Pato then blundered on a corner raising Columbian hopes. But these were quashed by a fortunate deflected goal by D.Milito who has missed a simple one on one chance just before. Overall Masche was immense winning the ball. Veron benefitted from the attention given to Messi & Riquelme & had a good game. Cambiasso played further forward & was solid. The refereeing was poor. Columbia deserved more than the one red card awarded to Vargas with some very crude tackling. Minuses were Pato.Carizzo has to start against Paraguay & stay in whilst D.Milito was truly awful. I criticised his selection before over Saviola indeed Palacio should be ahead of him as they both contribute to the whole team pattern. Carlitos received a warm welcome & he must be wondering along with Aimar what Basile was thinking. Time for some changes against Paraguay. Perhaps Burdisso,Gago, Diaz, Ibarra, Palacio will get a chance if some of the first team regulars are rested The humidity & heat is awful so it would be wise in my opinion. Time for a quick kip before work.

Argentina qualify via a scrappy 1-0 win over Paraguay. Goal from Masche. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tv4IGswnFPgGreat placement. Paraguay ,Venuzuela,Mexico ,Uruguay & Peru are through too. The whole set up 3 groups of 4 makes qualification fairly easy. I'v no idea baout the matchups barring Argentina taking on Peru. There have been allegations that some of the decisions in the Venuzuela games have had a touch of the homer about them.

Do Chile have a complex when playing Brazil ? Yesterday they plumbed the depths with only a superb Suazo effort lifting the gloom as they crashed to a 6-1 defeat after a 0-5 defeat in WC qualifying.
Injuries aside it was a poor performance against a Brazilian side lacking flair & invention.
Josue scored his first for Brazil & Robinho added to his tournaments tally .Brazil will now face the old giants of Uruguay who overcame the hosts Venuzuela but whose u20 stumbled to a shock 0-2 defeat against Zambia in Canada.
Tonight Mexico take on Paraguay & Argentina face Peru.
