The link for a basic overview of stadia groups & squads is good old Wikipedia. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copa_Am%C3%A9rica_2007The tourney got underway last night with a shock defeat for one time world superpower Uruguay. I'll be tuning in to see Messi & co on Thursday take on the USA who are fielding a rather young side plus Jay Demerit who had a solid Gold Cup tournament which can benefit only him & Watford over the next season. Argentina hold the lead over Brazil 14-7 in Copa wins but have not won it since 1993. This edition despite the absence of Jimenez (Chile), Kaka & Goofy(Brazil) is the strongest in terms of squad strengths of the last decade.

Argentina should storm this tournament! The only real weakness is the left side of defence with Gabby Milito & Heinze plus one of the worst goalkeepers to grace the international stage today.(try to catch his howlers against Algeria on youtube). I'd rather see Carizzo is is being strongly linked to AC Milan & West Ham take over. Basile will play his traditional all out attacking football with two playmakers to ensure Riquelme is not man marked out of any game. However using the snail like Veron as the other playmaker isn't my idea of progress. Rather have Aimar in there. Tevez will start on the bench & Saviola was omitted in favour of Zaragoza's Diego Milito. All things being equal the Auriverdes & Albicelestes should reach the final but the Copa always throws up surprises. Dunga is still seething about the absence of Kaka & Goofy making pointed barbs in his press conference yesterday.

i always thought he was quite solid but not really good enough to be playing for a team like Argentina.

Gw I'll post up a link to that video if I can find it. Looks like the game video has been removed. www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1uhOAyscrAwww.youtube.com/watch?v=cIVvJzi2r7A&mode=related&search=He's shocking truly shocking. Carizzo & Ustari can't come in soon enough to replace him. As for Maxi Peschi ,he did play in Atleticos last few games but was not deemed fully fit by Basile. Otherwise he would have been in along with Gonzalo Rodriguez & Ezequiel Garay. I think Heinze has lost it totally & Gabby Milito always makes at least one critical error in every game. His reading of games is suspect too. God knows why Juve want to sign him or indeed Rafa was chasing him.

I agree about Heinze aswel, didnt look so solid for Man Utd this season. A few fans I know wouldn't mind if he went, they rate Evra above him

Ustari had a standout season in 2005-6 along with Aguero & Biglia for Independiente.
Barcelona were so impressed that they sent along their general manager to arrange a first choice option on the player.
However in this seasons Clausura & Apertura whilst at times brilliant he's been dreadful in other games. Partly to expected given his age but maybe enough for Barca to wait another season before hauling him over.
Carizzo was outstanding for a River side bereft of ideas & traditional style. So much so AC Milan are trying to sign him. At least both these keepers can catch crosses ,are extremely agile (esp.Ustari )are excellent shop stoppers & unusually for Argentine keepers control their defence & command their area.
Ustari however missed out on the squad purely through a finger injury being replaced by Agustin Orion of the champions San Lorenzo.

With regards to Heinze it may well be he loses his place soon anyway. For an Argentina he isn;t that great technically but makes up for it in in physicality (which maybe going).
Pinola(Nurnberg German Cup champs) was called up ahead of him & in the next two to three years Emiliano Insua aged 17 at Liverpool ex of Boca is looked at as the ideal replacement.
Those two defenders Gonzalo Rodriguez & Garay are excellent replacements too & theres a huge (for a full back in stature) Federico Fazio(Sevilla) touted as a high quality right back who will be at the u20 FIFA World Cup starting shortly in Canada.
Manchester Utd & a number of other giants were/are keeping track of Garay & Gonzalo(who missed all this season at Villareal with a cruciate) who was named Best Young European defender in 2005-6.
Line up v USA is: -----------------------1 Abbondanzieri--------------------- 8Zanetti-----2Ayala--------------15Milito-------6Heinze ----------------------14Mascherano------------------------ -----------20Veron-------------19Cambiasso------------- ----------------------10Riquelme---------------------------- ------18Messi---------------9Crespo----------------------- Likely Subs 5 Gago 11 Tevez 21 Gonsalez.L

Hallo Peschi. By 3 subs I mean the ones Basile might use.
Anyway just going for a quick kip. Paraguay thumped Columbia 5-0with a hat rtik for Santa Cruz.
Just watched Argentina defeat USA 4-1. USA took the lead with a penalty . Crespo equalised bagged a second. It was the introduction of Aimar that unlocked a tough US defence. Aimar himself scored a superb header followed by Riquelme unlocking the US offside trap for Tevez to convert.
