Just finished watching 'Twenty Four Seven', the excellent Shane Meadow's directorial debut from 1997
9.5/10 - A really beautiful film. Bob Hoskins plays the lead role of Alan Darcy, a kind hearted man who sees the destitution in a depressed Nottinghamshire town and forms a boxing club for the local youths. As time goes by, the lads begin to develop a purpose in life, before a sad event conspires to change lives further. Despite moving me to tears, the ending is warm and uplifting.
Evocativally shot in black and white, impeccably observed, with a bittersweet optimistic message - why can't more films be like this?

Enjoyed that one myself gt. That said, I think Dead Mans Shoes is Meadows best so far. Paddy Considine is brilliant in it. Hard Candy.
Low budget thriller starring Ellen Page and Patrick Wilson.
Jeff, a 32 year old photographer (and paedophile) meets Hayley, a 14 year old girl in an internet chat room, and after some time she suggests they meet. The two meet up, get on well and encouraged by Hayley, Jeff takes her home to take some modelling shots.
Then, the tables turn. Hayley drugs Jeff, ties him up and proceeds to mentally torture him. We learn that the whole situation has been engineered so she can exact revenge for Jeff's behaviour.
Featuring an extended castration scene that is the most uncomfortable sequence of film I have ever watched, the film is suggestive rather than graphic (think, the ear slicing scene in Reservoir Dogs). But it is enough to make ANY man wince.
Ellen Page's performance in her first major role is astonishing, so effective in fact, that come the finale, you're no longer entirely sure where your sympathies lie.
9/10

Can't disagree with that mate, it's a menacing tour de force from Considine and superbly shot on precision locations. Also got hold of 'A Room For Romeo Brass' which he is in, another excellent Shane Meadows film. The bit where Considine's character finally loses it is quite terrifying - I've rarely enjoyed a celluloid beating as much as the one Frank Harper metes out to him in the garden!

Ice Age 2 (coz i'm sad like that and I love most animated fillems) Give it a 8/10, the animation is fantastic apart from the blocks of ice that barely break and the way the mammoths run but the one liners are classic and almost as good as the first one. Too much lovey doveyness for this one but a comedy classic all the same

The Virgin Suicides 7.5/10. Dug it out of my personal library as a perennial favourite.
Wonderful score from Air ,great camerawork & solidly acted.
But a touch uninvolving. The fate of the sisters is treated in a cold calculated fashion which lays the blame firmly on strict parenting & the angst of youth (though why they consult mass suicide all of a sudden is unexplained)as well as introducing a dual environmental theme the fate of the 5 girls are linked in almost Greek way to the fate of the local suburban elms.Sick humanity & sick nature.
Some genuinely touching moments & for those with a nostalgic bent a truly sentimental moment with the empty house devoid of life & the girls posessions scattered inside it.
Beautifully made & well worth watching IMO.

The Departed.
I only saw an hour of it though due to having had to be evacuated from the cinema.
I was really getting into the film. I was surprised too because it's not really my kind of film. Violent, gritty etc.
Jack Nicholson, Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon are the main protagonists and all put on a great performance. Ray Winstone is also in the film, but I must say, his American accent is absolutely shocking!
From the bit that I saw, I'd give it a 5/6 out of 10

Beautifully made & well worth watching IMO. Loved 'The Virgin Suicides' I'd say it's a better movie than 'Lost In Translation'. It's beautifully shot, and has a lovely hazy look to it. You're right about the soundtrack too. I like Air very much anyway and this soundtrack is one of the best things they've done. Especially 'Playground Love'. Probably the role that made Kirsten Dunst's career too. I'd give it a strong 8/10.
