The fickle odeon feature presentation today...... Brick Film noir meets high school flick made on a miniscule budget ($500,000), by a first-time director, and highly original, this has been compared by some to Donnie Darko and it's easy to see why. The film follows the story of high school student Brendan (Joseph Gordon-Levitt). Brendan recieves a distressed phone call from his ex-girlfiend Emily, and shortly afterwards finds her dead body, he decides to go on a quest to discover who's responsible for her murder. Shot and directed with immense style, the film betrays the fact that it was edited on a home computer. Little quirks in the storyline (eg. the local mob boss lives with his mum, who bakes him cookies) also add to the films distinct charm. At times, it must be said, the dialogue can be almost inpenetrable, and consequently, the story a little difficult to follow, so (again like Donnie Darko), multiple viewings are a must. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but wouldn't quite say it was in DD's class - it lacks the quality 80's soundtrack for starters, the story isn't as strong, and although it's well acted, there are some better supporting turns in DD. The phrase 'cult classic' certainly springs to mind though. 8/10 Next up.......Basic Instinct 2

Brilliant!!
Tthe De Niro & Pesci double act portray mobsters hitting it big in Las Vegas with Sharon Stone (a bit ropey to be honest), as the love interest. At almost 3 hours long the film feels stretched but it isn't.
Best of mates falling out, casino life, mob bosses overseeing the activities, complicated love triangles, violence, relationships, laughs and comedy (where does Pesci get his wigs from) - its got it all. And I think it's one of Pesci's best performances aside from JFK and Goodfellas!
And in The Godfather / Scorsesee style the best is saved to the end. The last 20 mins or so when the Mafia hits are actioned - BRILLIANT. And have to say the beating (to bloody pulp) and burial alive of Pesci and his screen brother are sickening!
A great film - but be ready for some shocks - guess Las Vegas ain't all glamour, girls and gambling!
A deffo 9/10 and up there alongside The Godfather and Goodfellas!

Death by biro, and the head in a vice torture methods are certainly highlights in 'Casino' too

Children of Men - 9/10. Very good, superb acting, although i just can't take seriously any terrorist group who would refer to themselves as the 'fishes'

Candyman
"Why do you want to live? If you would learn just a little from me, you would not beg to live. I am rumor. It is a blessed condition, believe me. To be whispered about at street corners. To live in other people's dreams... but not to have to be. Do you understand?"
"The pain, I can assure you... will be exquisite. As for our deaths, there is nothing to fear. Our names will be written on a thousand walls. Our crimes told and retold by our faithful believers. We shall die together in front of their very eyes... and give them something to be haunted by. Come with me... and be immortal."
Watched this classic again last night, and in all honesty, I forgot how much it used to scare me, given that I hadn't seen it for over 10 years. If anything, now that I actually understand everything that was going on, it was even worse.
This film isn't based around a plot so much as an idea, and while in many cases this can leave you wondering when something's actually going to happen, Candyman pulls it off superbly. The 'idea' is that two university students are researching an urban legend, and the subject of this legend - Candyman, a man who was brutally murdered years ago and who has a hook driven into the bloody stump where his right hand was cut off - turns out to be very real and becomes infatuated with one of them. Cue sufficient brutal killings and bloodflow, as well as requisite jumpy moments, to firmly drop this film in the horror category, and a villain whose story and motive is more than enough to throw this film in among the better thrillers too (and despite this, a small part of you can't help but feel for him too).
The acting is brilliant throughout (Virginia Madsen as Helen resists all OTT 'damsel in distress' dramatics, and Tony Todd as the Candyman is positively eerie), Philip Glass' score is creepy enough to send shivers up your spine even outside of the film, and Bernard Rose's directing is spot-on.
There is some interesting trivia surrounding this film too, not least of all the fact that real bees were actually put into Tony Todd's mouth while they where shooting the climax. His only protection was a mouth guard that kept him from having the bees go down his throat.
If you want a film to scare yourself with, this is certainly one worth going for. I have yet to meet anyone who can confidently stand in front of a mirror and say Candyman's name five times after watching it the first time (or even the fifth in many cases), and most people won't even try it. This film does to mirrors what Ringu ('The Ring') did to TVs for many people; only much worse.
Neko's verdict: 8/10

Basic Instinct 2 : Risk Addiction *sighs* Well, I watched this film with an open mind. I know it's been almost universally panned, but some films manage to so bad they're good - not this one!!! As the film starts we see Catherine Trammell (Sharon Stone) driving around London's (desserted!) streets at over 100mph, a stoned Stan Collymore in the passenger seat. Collymore then proceeds to 'stimulate' her with his fingers, upon reaching the 'heights of ecstacy' she loses control of the car and veers into the Thames, taking 'Stan the Man'. AND IT'S DOWNHILL ALL THE WAY FROM THERE!!!! The story is dull, lacks any credibility, the dialogue is absolutely laughable, while the double entendres would've even been frowned upon in a Carry On movie. Only David Thewliss escapes with any credit, merely on the grounds that he is so obviously not taking the film seriously. Everybody else involved should be wholly embarrased. A contender for the worst sequel EVER. Shameful! 1/10

TRAINING DAY
If you haven't seen it then you have to ask yourself why not and then rent/buy it. Value for money for the soundtrack alone but also as it doesn't matter how fucking hard your world is it is not as bad as theirs. And for people that don't believe there is Vatos and brothers like the gangs they have to deal with then google MS13 or Bloods/Crips and read all about them..
Good cop/bad cop film with a lot of different stories all blending top class. Violent, funny, endearing and blows you away.. Buy it if it isn't for rent as it is worth every penny..

Transamerica Another one of those 'brave' and 'worthy' film that the Academy wet themselves over, come Oscar season. Felicity Huffman plays a transexual on the brink of taking the final step towards completing his/her transformation into a woman (ie. an operation to turn his/her cock inside out.). When a phonecall comes out of the blue, from a teen claiming to be his (I'll stick with his while the cock remains ) son, his confidant (who is also his doctor) advises him that he must resolve the issue, otherwise he would not be considered pyschologically sound enough for surgery. So off he goes to New York, posing as a Christian missionary, to bail his son out of prison. However, the plan to re-unite his son with his stepfather fails miserably. So they go on a road trip/journey of discovery, meet some quirky characters, grow close, the truth is revealed, the son gets the hump and leaves, then returns....THE END. It's alright, but nothing special. 5/10 NB. Upon release the critics lavished praise on Huffman's performance, but remarked that she looked far too attractive to look like a man. Thought that was a bit harsh. Believe me, I ain't had any in ages, but if a girl who looked like that offered me it on a plate, I still wouldn't touch her with a bargepole!!
