Taken from Steve Sidwell's diary entry on ICONS.COM I want to stay at Reading There has been a lot of speculation flying around surrounding my future at Reading in recent weeks. What has actually happened is before the season finished, Reading approached me to sign a new deal and I said that I would do so, no problem at all, if they gave me the contract that I wanted. Obviously the deal had to be right for myself, because I'm coming to an important stage of my career now – the most important years in a footballer's career are the ones I am about to enter. They approached me with a deal soon after, but I wasn't happy with it, and both me and my agent rejected it. There has been a lot of speculation about other clubs being involved and Charlton have put in a bid for me. Reading turned it down and said that I'm not for sale, but it triggered off a clause in my contract that allowed me to speak to them. We spoke to them and they offered me a certain amount. I have since told Reading to try and match it because my preference is to stay, but they haven't done that, so that's why it's all in a bit of limbo at the moment. Charlton are the only team to have tabled an official offer and it is flattering that they are willing to pay such money for me. It was a privilege for me to just go down there and have a talk about the club. I'm a South London boy and it would be closer to home, which is a big factor as to why it would maybe be a good move for me. I think the fans would appreciate me because I know what the fans at Charlton want. So if it works out then great, but as I say I want to stay at Reading and if I can do it on the deal that I want then I'll be very happy. I feel like I've done a lot to get Reading into the position they are in today and believe I should be rewarded for that. I'm a bit disappointed the club don't value me like I think they should. And it's not just me. A few of the lads should be rewarded with contracts. I want to make it clear that I am not making ridiculous demands. I am making reasonable demands that the club can pay. Reading are in the Premiership now, not in League Two where some people at the club think we still are. We are in the big world. The whole club needs to be run like a Premiership club. There are a few things that happened last year that the lads weren't happy about, but hopefully things will change and the board and a few other people can see that the club are worthy of a place in the Premiership and start acting like a Premiership club. It would be a wrench to leave and at this moment in time I do not want to. I am happy here. But if we can't get anything sorted at all either way, then I've got a year left on my contract, I'll see it out and then I'll be available on a free. I've worked so hard to get Reading into the Premiership and it'd be nice to see it out. I'd love it if all parties can come together and reach an agreement. But if it doesn't work out I've got to look after myself and my family – I've got a little boy to look after now – and that's what I have to think about. I've not spoken to Steve Coppell about it. I'm not disappointed, though. He might not want to get involved in this kind of thing, I think. There's not been a lot of talking between people at all really and that's why it's all up in the air. Away from the club, I'm really enjoying the World Cup. I was thinking of going out there but with all this going on I need to be in England at the moment. Hopefully I'll get out there later in the tournament though because the atmosphere looks amazing. Very interesting eh guys?

yeah mate very interesting.
were did you get it from?
i wouldnt mind too much if he did just see out his contract and went on a free, at least it would save us having to spend 5 mil to replace him this year

I think we need to know sooner rather than later so that if necessary we can start looking for a replacement.

All i'm saying is its great to see the way your club rewards success. He has an offerfrom another club, you won't match it - simple decision for the player. And it can't be a huge offer, come on its charlton!

And it can't be a huge offer, come on its charlton! His reasoning though is that he now has a kid and £12,000 a week is not enough to secure that kids future. £48,000 a month the blokes talking shit! If he wants to leave at least just be honest and not make up complete rubbish!

If I was you, I'd be more concerned about who you were bringing in, rather than who was leaving. Have you signed anyone yet?

Coppell is being sensible and waiting for the right players to add to an already good and quite young squad. But I am getting a tad nervous, however transfers in general are slow coz of the world cup.

I have to say i think both of us will be alright next season. we've strengthened our backline, which had to be the priority, and as such look a lot more solid. You walked the ccc last season - I know this guarantees nothing, but you were by far the best team in that div last season.

If its only £12k a week JM has lost the plot. That is at the bottom end of Prem salaries. Just give him the fucking money and if he wants write a clause in his contract saying he can leave cheap if we get relegated. I know for a fact Sonko is on more than that and Lita is on a fair bit more. GIVE THE CAPTAIN THE MONEY!

Are main targets are 2 more centre backs. Next season is all about 1-0 2-1 wins.

Your club is losing its marbles arnie. Sidwell is instrumental to you, yet you won't meet another club's valuation.

Shows how much the media can show you the wrong end of the stick.

Hammond gives the latest news on contract discussions with Steve Sidwell
10:30am, Friday 23rd June 2006
Steve Sidwell
Director Of Football Nick Hammond has given the official site the latest news on our contract talks with Steve Sidwell.
Sidwell, 23, has one more year remaining on his current deal, and talks are ongoing about extending this on revised terms.
Nick told readingfc.co.uk, "We started planning for the Premiership well before the end of last season, and one of the first things we wished to do was sort out contract issues with key players.
"Extending Steve Sidwell's contract has always been one of the priorities.
"I've had number of ongoing meetings with Steve's representative, as well as speaking to him directly.
"A lot has been said about the clauses in his contract. The truth is that there was a clause from the time of Steve's original contract when he signed as a young player from Arsenal, after having loan spells at Brentford and Brighton.
"This put a value on the player at that time, but it bears no relation to him now as an international Premiership player.
"The clause allows him to speak to any club who meet that valuation, but anything will only be done if it suits Reading Football Club, our current valuation of him and our plans moving forward.
"Steve remains very much part of our plans for the Premiership, and we're determined to do all we can to keep him.
"I will meet with him again shortly, and I remain convinced he wants to complete the job he started with Reading."

I have inside information and it is not good............. Charlton offered Sidwell £16k a week and we had apparently matched this so on that basis he would have probably stayed at Reading. However Man City have apparently now offered him £25k a week Bye bye then Sidders

However Man City have apparently now offered him £25k a week Bye bye then Sidders Ah crap I was afraid of that happening. I mean in all honesty £16k a week is nothing in the Prem these days. At least he is going to a decent club unlike shitty Charlton. Makes me feel better somehow
