It's time that a proper debate about this was had.
I don't give a rat's ass about my Karma level. All the bickering about the smiting issue is really getting on my ample moobs.
It's a message board for Christ's sake. Let's get on with posting whatever we like and accepting that we've all got different points of view.
Come on, have your say. VOTE now.

My suggestion would be to tell people to stop taking it so seriously! As that isn't going to happen, it'd probably best that we get rid of it and see if there's an alternative 'reward'.

I'll move this to the main board. More people might see it then.

I think if we as posters are only on the site to earn "rewards" of any description, then to be fair, we're on here for the wrong reason.
I understand what you mean Jenny and there's some merit in it. However, offering rewards for achieving certain things (whatever they may be) will:
a) be a distraction; posters are on here to chat and comment and debate and not worry about their apparent popularity (which is defined by their Karma figures and any alternative reward system) b) It may be a source of further irritation and jealousy if the same posters are the ones being rewarded. It might prevent people from participating.
Getting rid of the whole idea would make all posters equal in the eyes of new posters - we can then all concern ourselves with the most important thing and that is INCREASING our post counts!
And it's not that long ago that many of us were posters on the BBC606 site - and that was a site with no post counts or Karma facility yet it didn't discourage people from posting. (The only discouragement came from an over-bearing and nanny-state-esque moderation team)

Lol. That's no problem Mike! It's actually nicer to read that someone appreciates the idea rather than see an increase in my already swollen Karma figures! ;D But joking apart, I really don't care about Karma!

I'd say scrap it. Not got a problem with it personally, but others seem to be taking it too seriously.

I dont think people take KARMA seriously, but they take offence if someone has been smiting them and they dont know why! Unlike me, some people use a smite to get back at someone - where as i would just have it out with them - this is what causes problems, not so much the Karma but the underhanded nature of it all! So..get rid and its problem solved - i can argue with everyone without consequence!!

I'd say keep it, but only if everyone was sensible to realise that it's an intangiable element on a messageboard that will not affect your ability to post/have fun/get a decent credit rating in the real world.
I don't care if people have higher/lower karma than me, I don't get if I get smited. I've had my Karma drop massively in the space of a week before - I didn't care then, I wouldn't care now. I don't lie awake at night obsessing over how might possibly perhaps hold a grudge against me on a message board. Be happy and stop worrying people, we're here to have fun!

Personally, I'm yet to lose my temper on here anyway, the closest I've ever come being I seem to remember a bit of a rant on the England vs Macedonia thread about booing National Anthems and stuff, but I've had no reason to get annoyed with any individuals, and as far as I'm aware, not said anything to get anyone annoyed with me. No smites given, no smites received (watch my karma rocket down now! ).

I think that it's not the being smited and losing karma, it's the fact that posters can be snide about it. We're all big enough and ugly enough to accept the fact that other posters out there aren't going to like us or agree with us, it's when these posters don't tell you up front and behave in an underhanded way that it's annoying. And yes, it's JUST a MB, but I know I wouldn't like being slagged off in the real world by someone who wasn't adult enough to say it to my face, so why do it on here?

Can't believe that anybody takes any of this seriously at all, but if it means that we get a quiet life in which to post footie opinions and other assorted nonsense then get rid. Not even that fussed about post counts - in fact sometimes they can be positively embarrassing. Must get out more

And our combined efforts in the lives of RBNO mean we have spent an inordinate amount of time doing actually, not a lot...... ;D
