The axing of directors Jimmy and Vince Russo from Watford's board this week followed a bust-up with chairman Graham Simpson.
The source of the row is unclear, though insiders suggest it stems from a relatively trivial matter.
It is perhaps no coincidence that only a week ago chief executive Mark Ashton - a key ally of Simpson - was promoted to the club's board following speculation linking him with a job at Manchester United.
The row represents a huge turnaround in the relationship between Simpson and the Russo brothers.
The wealthy salad growers bailed the club out of financial trouble in 2004 after being invited to join the board by Simpson.
