Marlon King has been arrested after a night club brawl on New Year's Day, it emerged last night.
The Watford striker - who is injured and will not play again this season - was held following a bust-up at the Penthouse club in London's Leicester Square.
King, 26, who has previously served time in prison for driving a stolen BMW, was taken to Charing Cross police station in London.
He was arrested in the nightclub after police were called to the venue at 12.50am on January 1.
Sources said that he originally claimed that he was "homeless" and, for a while, refused to tell officers his true identity. King also kept the incident from Watford manager Aidy Boothroyd, until yesterday.
He was questioned on suspicion of assault and occasioning actual bodily harm. No details have been released of the alleged victim. King has been bailed to return to a police station in February.
A Scotland Yard spokeswoman said: "A man in his 20s has been arrested on suspicion of assault and ABH. He has been bailed to return to a London police station in February."
King made a superb start to the Premiership season before suffering a serious knee injury in the defeat by Arsenal in October, and his absence has been cited as a key factor in Watford's struggles.
He was sentenced to 18 months - reduced to five on appeal - in 2002 for driving the stolen BMW.
Reflecting on the experience in an interview with Sportsmail last year he said: "I got caught up in something and I didn't realise what was going on until it was too late. I let myself down and I let my family down. But I feel like it has tarnished my name. My reputation.
"Footballers are footballers," he said. "They are presented as role models but they are also human beings and they make the same mistakes as everyone else."
A Watford spokesperson said: "The club has been made aware of an alleged incident but we have been advised by the police not to make any further comment at this moment in time."
