Laois broken down by Cats Sunday, 19 February 2006 9:18
Champions Kilkenny raced to the top of NHL Division 1B table as they overcame Laois at Nowlan Park by 1-26 to 1-13.
Lining out at full forward, Richie Power proved to be the Cats' key man, scoring 0-13. But with seven league debutants on show, Brian Cody's men did not have it all their own way.
The first half was a tight affair. The sides were level at 0-02 apiece after 6 minutes. Jody Coogan (free) and Philip Russell pointed for the hosts with Power and newcomer Peter Cleere striking over for the Cats.
A Damien Culleton goal on 8 minutes rocked Kilkenny onto their heels and the Laois still led at 1-04 to 0-03, thirteen minutes later.
However, a tactical switch which saw 2003 All-Star Eddie Brennan move from centre forward to full-forward paid dividends fo Kilkenny. Indeed, Brennan goaled on the half hour to help his side in at the break with a 1-10 to 1-06 lead. Kilkenny ended the half well with points from Michael Rice, Power, Brennan and Austin Murphy.
It took just 15 seconds for Michael Kavanagh to hit the opening point of the second half. Three points from Laois forward James Young brought his tally to five points, however Dinny Cahill's men were faltering.
They conceded seven points on the bounce - five to Power, and one each to corner forwards James 'Cha' Fitzpatrick and Aidan Fogarty - as Cody's men stretched their legs. Fitzpatrick finished with a 0-05 tally.
Nonetheless, Kilkenny will undoubtedly need a more consistent performance if they are to beat Tipperary in Thurles next Sunday.

Cummins masterclass fails to save Tipp Sunday, 26 February 2006 9:48 Three-time All-Star Brendan Cummins put on a goalkeeping masterclass but still ended up on the losing side as Kilkenny overcame Tipperary by 0-19 to 0-10 in this NHL Division 1B clash in Thurles.
The Tipperary goalkeeper, who turns 31 in May, drew the plaudits at he pulled off a string of stunning saves in the first half. It was five in all for the Ballybacon/Grange clubman.
Cummins twice parried penalty efforts from Richie Power, thwarted the same player on 25 minutes, Eoin Reid, four minutes later, and a combination of Reid and James 'Cha' Fitzpatrick on 31 minutes when he produced a brilliant double save.
However, the heroic Cummins could do little about the Cats' points scoring and Tipp's lack of it in the closing 25 minutes - Babs Keating's side mustered only a single point from the 46th minute onwards.
Kilkenny, showing five changes from last weekend's home win against Laois, led 0-10 to 0-3 at the break and built on their lead with Power finishing with 0-7 to his name. Fitzpatrick scored 0-4.
Corner-forward Seamus Butler top-scored for Tipp with six points - four of those coming from frees.
Conor O'Mahony (2 frees), Benny Dunne and Shane McGrath, who made his league debut in the draw with Limerick last Sunday, were also on the mark for the home side.
In the next round Kilkenny face a trip to Limerick (March 12), while Tipperary must visit unbeaten Antrim, who are level on four points with the Cats at the business end of Division 1B.

Bergin foils Dublin Colleges ;D ;D ;D
KILKENNY CBS 1-14
DUBLIN COLLEGES 2-9
MARK BERGIN, the Kilkenny CBS centre-forward, gave an outstanding performance as the Kilkenny school won their sixth Leinster Colleges' SHC "A" title and their first since 1983, in a thrilling final against Dublin Colleges at Dr Cullen Park, Carlow yesterday.
Bergin scored 0-9 of his side's tally, 0-8 from frees. However, it was the manner in which he performed in the final 15 minutes, operating between his own midfield and half-back line, when he hurled a mountain of vital balls, which proved the winning of the game.
Dublin Colleges trailed from the third minute but they were level on 13 minutes when left-half-forward Cain McBride crashed home a close range goal.
CBS stormed away for the remainder of the half and by half time led by 0-9 to 1-1, having played with the strong wind.
Within 30 seconds of the restart, Dublin substitute Johnny Cooper had pointed from play, but Mark Kelly responded immediately with a point.
The Kilkenny goal came in the 38th minute when a free from Bergin was touched to the Dublin Colleges' net by Cillian Starr.
On 56 minutes the game sprang back to life when a speculative shot from midfield by Dublin Colleges' Ross O'Carroll was fumbled by Kilkenny goalie Diarmuid Molloy and ended up in the net to cut the deficit to the minimum 1-12 to 2-8.
A brace of Kilkenny points from Anthony Stapleton and Mark Bergin (free) restored a three-point lead for CBS. In a frantic finish, the Kilkenny school just held out.
SCORERS - Kilkenny: M Bergin 0-9 (8f), A Stapleton 0-3, C Starr 1-0, M Kelly 0-2. Dublin Colleges: P Ryan 0-4 (3f, 1pen), C McBride, R O'Carroll 1-0 each, D Connelly, J Sheanon, S Murphy(f), J Cooper, S O'Rourke 0-1 each.

kilkenny play antrim this sunday, another 2 points ;D Kilkenny 0-12 Antrim 1-7 THE width of a post saved lethargic Kilkenny from potential embarrassment in a tough slog of a National League clash at wet Nowlan Park yesterday. Kilkenny, the league champions, assured themselves of a place in the quarter-finals at least, but Antrim made the long journey home with serious thoughts of what might have been. In the 54th minute Brian McFall sliced open the home defence and sent Patrick Richmond racing towards goal, but his fiercely struck shot from 14 yards came back into play off an upright. "That post beat us," lamented Antrim manager Jim McKernan. "Had we scored a goal at that stage it could have changed the run of the game." Kilkenny responded to that narrow escape with four unanswered points from Eoin Larkin, Willie O'Dwyer, Larkin again and Michael Rice during the next seven minutes to move into the safety of a 0-12 to 0-6 lead. Brave Antrim didn't give up the chase. Centre-back Karl McKeegan pulled back a point from a free before lively substitute Joey Scullion bagged a super goal two minutes from the end after two home defenders messed up an attempted clearance. While the visitors pushed hard after that, they could make no further inroads and Kilkenny were happy to hear the final whistle. "It wasn't a good performance from us, but the result was important," said Kilkenny boss Brian Cody. "We are happy to be in the quarter-finals. It wasn't an easy day for hurling, and a win was all we wanted." For Kilkenny, John Tennyson, Bryan Barry and Tommy Walsh coped best with the slippery conditions, but as a game it was poor, and the small attendance of no more than 1,500 got little or nothing to shout about. MAN OF THE MATCH - John Tennyson SCORERS - Kilkenny: E Larkin 0-4 (3f), E Reid 0-2, M Fennelly, M Comerford, E Brennan, W O'Dwyer, B Barry (1f), M Rice 0-1 each. Antrim: J Scullion 1-1, K McKeegan 0-2 (2f), J McIntosh 0-2 (1f) J Campbell, M Herron 0-1 each. KILKENNY - PJ Ryan; M Kavanagh, JJ Delaney, S Maher; J Ryall, J Tennyson, T Walsh; B Barry, M Fennelly; M Rice, D Lyng, E Larkin; E Reid, M Comerford, E Brennan. Subs: B Quinn for G Bell (48), J Scullion for Delargy (53), M Scullion for McFall (64), C Hamill for McIntosh (64) REF - A MacSuibhne (Dublin).

Kilkenny 1-16 Galway 0-10 NHL Division 1B GALWAY hit Kilkenny for 5-18 in last year's All-Ireland semi-final but found the black and amber defensive locks a whole lot more secure at Pearse Stadium yesterday. Ger Farragher and Niall Healy did their best to pick them but got no support from a misfiring half forward line, while full-forward Eugene Cloonan never escaped from JJ Delaney's vigilant watch and was replaced late on by Damien Hayes. It was all so different at the other end as Kilkenny fired over some brilliant points, especially in the final 20 minutes which they won by 1-7 to 0-1 to advance to the Allianz League semi-finals on April 23. Galway needed to win to reach the quarter-finals but struggled in far too many sectors and were eventually well beaten, leaving Conor Hayes with much to dwell on before Galway head into championship action on June 17. Only three Galway forwards scored whereas nine Kilkenny players got on the scoresheet, extending from corner-back, Donncha Cody to midfielder, Michael Rice to five of the six starting forwards, plus subs, James Ryall and Willie O'Dwyer. O'Dwyer made quite an impression in a lively second half and crowned a most satisfactory day for Kilkenny with a stoppage time goal. Excellent Damien Joyce, Ger Mahon and David Collins did well in the Galway defence while goalkeeper, Liam Donoghue made an excellent save from Martin Comerford in the 12th minute but not even that quartet could continue to resist the pressure as Kilkenny whipped up a powerful momentum over the home stretch. Rival managers, Brian Cody and Conor Hayes exchanged a few pleasantries late on after Damien Hayes had been fouled although both played it down afterwards. Cody had a whole lot more reasons to enjoy his day by the seaside as the victory was achieved without James McGarry, Derek Lyng, Richie Mullally, Peter Barry, DJ Carey, Eddie Brennan, Henry Shefflin and Noel Hickey. The latter two returned to the subs' bench yesterday which is more good news for Kilkenny who clearly have their sights set on another League triumph. While it was Kilkenny's enterprising attack that ultimately sunk Galway, the defence deserve enormous credit for the manner in which they restricted the home attack to just 0-6 from play. Centre-back, John Tennyson was a solid anchor in a tightly-knit defence where Tommy Walsh, JJ Delaney and sub, James Ryall also thrived. Michael Rice hurled lots of ball around midfield, an area where Galway failed to present an imposing presence which added to their difficulties. Kilkenny broke from the blocks very quickly, popping over three points against the wind in the first six minutes before Galway enjoyed their best spell. They hit 0-5 in eight minutes, with Farragher landing four. He finished on 0-6 but should have had a whole lot more as he shot no fewer than seven wides. It was level at half-time (0-7 each) and again after 47 minutes when a Niall Healy booted point brought it to 0-9 each. However, as the wind strength increased, Kilkenny settled into an impressive rhythm and when Donncha Cody hoisted a 100-metre free over the bar, it signalled the beginning of Galway's demise. It came quite quickly as Kilkenny continued to shoot some excellent points and they were well on their way to the League semi-finals by the time Niall Healy broke the trend with Galway's only score of the final quarter. Richie Power could even afford to take a point rather than attempt a goal from a penalty in the 63rd minute but Kilkenny finally beat Donoghue in the 71st minute when O'Dwyer availed of a defensive error and whipped the ball to the net. It was a classic piece of Kilkenny opportunism in a performance which will leave them in a very upbeatmood. "It opened up a bit for the forwards in the second half. We started getting a bit more room and were able to pick off the scores," said Martin Comerford. Galway were never able to create that sort of space. Conor Hayes acknowledged that it is a loss not to have reached the quarter-finals as Galway now face 11 weeks without a competitive game. "It's not the ideal preparation for the championship but there's nothing we can do about it now," he said. MAN OF THE MATCH - J Tennyson SCORERS - Kilkenny: R Power 0-4 (3f, 1pen), W O'Dwyer 1-1, E Larkin 0-3, M Comerford, A Fogarty 0-2 each, M Rice, J Fitzpatrick, J Ryall, D Cody (f), 0-1 each. Galway: G Farragher 0-6 (3f, 1'65'), N Healy 0-3, R Murray 0-1. KILKENNY - PJ Ryan; M Kavanagh, JJ Delaney, D Cody; J Tyrrell, J Tennyson, T Walsh; M Fennelly, M Rice; M Comerford, R Power, E Larkin; E McCormack, J Fitzpatrick, A Fogarty. Subs: J Ryall for Tyrrell (ht), W O'Dwyer for McCormack (ht). GALWAY - L Donoghue; D Joyce, T Og Regan, G Mahon; D Hardiman, C Dervan, D Collins; F Healy, S Kavanagh; D Tierney, D Forde, R Murray; G Farragher, E Cloonan, N Healy. Subs: A Callanan for Forde (45), D Hayes for Cloonan (62). REF - B Kelly (Westmeath). ;D St Flannan's 1-11 Kilkenny CBS 0-13 All-Ireland Cols SHC A ST FLANNAN'S booked their spot in the All-Ireland Colleges SHC A final against Dublin Colleges following a hard-earned victory over a determined Kilkenny CBS side in Nenagh yesterday. The result means that the champions of Munster and Leinster - Midleton CBS and Kilkenny CBS - failed to advance to the final with Flannan's, beaten in the Munster final, now meeting losing Leinster finalists Dublin Colleges after their 1-13 to 0-10 win over Midleton on Saturday. The first half yesterday was a low-scoring affair with Flannan's, with the aid of the breeze, failing to capitalise on copious amounts of possession, shooting seven wides in the first quarter alone. Centre-forward Colm Madden had a goalbound shot cleared off the line by the alert Jody Creane in the 15th minute before two points from Conor Tierney and John Conlon put Flannan's 0-4 to 0-0 ahead. Mark Bergin opened Kilkenny's account in the 24th minute as the Ennis side led 0-6 to 0-2 half-time. A pulsating second half saw Flannan's stave off a strong fightback with three successive Bergin frees bringing Kilkenny to within one point before Madden hit a goal in the 40th minute. Kilkenny fought back to within one point again in the 56th minute, aided by two fantastic points from sideline cuts from John Fitzpatrick. Flannan's dug deep, though, and two sparkling points from Ross Horan and Conor Tierney saw them home. SCORERS - St Flannan's: C Madden 1-0; C Nealon, J Conlon 0-3 each; C Tierney 0-2; B Coffey, D Ryan (f), R Horan 0-1 each. Kilkenny CBS: M Bergin 0-6 (5f, 1 '65); M Kelly, J Fitzpatrick 0-2 each; D Webster, J Comerford, A Stapleton 0-1 each. Kilkenny 3-20
Tipperary 2-11
NHL Div 1 semi-final
SO MUCH for hurling's historic Big Three. The fabled rivalry between Kilkenny and Tipperary may stretch back through the ages but, right now, the two teams appear to be occupying different galaxies.
Tipp are stuck in a rut and their predatory neighbours took full advantage at Semple Stadium yesterday, setting up an Allianz League decider against Limerick next Sunday.
For 35 minutes, this was an embarrassing mismatch. Kilkenny went for every ball with channelled aggression, their first touch had the stamp of summer about it and their shooting was almost flawless. They led by 2-13 to 1-4 at the turnaround, with 2-11 coming from play and just two wides.
Kilkenny were that good; their opponents every bit as bad. And it could have been even worse, Eoin Kelly's injury-time bullet from a 20-metre free offering a momentary release for traumatised home fans.
Tipp showed a belated burst of pride on the resumption as Kilkenny appeared to take a mental raincheck.
Yet, typically, they were even denied the moral victory of 'winning' the second half, which finished level after Kilkenny stirred themselves to score a late unanswered 1-2.
Henry Shefflin capped his comeback with their third goal on 66 minutes, courtesy of a high catch and trademark venomous shot.
This late flourish may have disguised Tipp's improved showing, with substitute Diarmaid Fitzgerald exposing previously unseen chinks in front of the Kilkenny goal, but that will only be of minor consolation to Babs Keating & Co.
The Tipp management have a multitude to ponder between now and their Munster opener against Limerick in three weeks' time.
Even after a recent upturn in results, supporters approached this game fearing the worst. Their trepidation was well-founded.
Inside four minutes, Martin Comerford accelerated through the centre before his scooped shot caught Brendan Cummins lurking off his line and dropped under the bar.
Tipp should have known it wasn't their day when Eoin Kelly's goal attempt came back off an upright. With Tommy Walsh sweeping imperiously in a dominant half-back line, Comerford running amok on the '40' and Aidan Fogarty landing four points from the left corner, they accelerated into the distance.
Shefflin has lost none of that renowned touch or vision during his injury-enforced hibernation; he released the livewire 'Cha' Fitzpatrick for goal No 2 on 14 minutes.
So Tipp trailed by 2-3 before a Kelly free broke their duck a minute later. Declan Fanning, labouring at centre-back, was then hauled ashore and their first score from play (via Ken Dunne) didn't arrive until the 34th minute.
Kelly's first goal lifted the siege, and they scored five of the first six points on the resumption. Kelly pounced for an opportunist second goal after 52 minutes, after James McGarry had blocked Fitzgerald's initial attempt, cutting the gap to seven.
"Our display in the first half was good. Our display in the second half was kind of lethargic," surmised perfectionist Brian Cody, expressing particular delight at Noel Hickey's big-match return after his heart problem.
Man of the match - M Comerford
SCORERS - Kilkenny: M Comerford 1-5, H Shefflin 1-3 (2f), J Fitzpatrick 1-2, A Fogarty 0-4, W O'Dwyer, E Larkin (1 '65) 0-2 each, D Lyng, E Reid 0-1 each. Tipperary: E Kelly 2-6 (1-5f), P Kelly, K Dunne, D Egan, J O'Brien 0-1 each.
KILKENNY - J McGarry; M Kavanagh, JJ Delaney, N Hickey; J Tyrrell, J Tennyson, T Walsh; D Lyng, R Mullally; W O'Dwyer, M Comerford, E Larkin; J Fitzpatrick, H Shefflin, A Fogarty. Subs: C O'Mahoney for Fanning (23), J O'Brien for McGrath (33), D Fitzgerald for Webster (half-time), G O'Grady for Morrissey (47), J Woodlock league final this sunday ;D
