Wolves striker Sam Vokes’s chances of a loan move were beaten by the clock – 30 minutes before a deadline switch to Derby.
Nigel Clough’s Championship outfit won the race from a clutch of clubs to sign the 19-year-old Welsh international for the rest of the season as a replacement for Middlesbrough-bound Rob Hulse.
But when that move fell through half an hour before yesterday’s 5pm cut-off, Vokes was left high and dry.
It is believed former Albion forward Hulse failed to settle personal terms after the clubs agreed a £4m fee. Former Bournemouth striker Vokes could still move this month, through the loan window, which opens next Tuesday and allows Premier League players to move to the Football League.

I expect he'll move to you next week went the loan window opens. I understand the move collapsed yesterday after Hulse turned down the offer to move, and Clough couldn't guarantee him first team football. He'll be a great addition, has all the assets to become a very good striker.

Wasn't he lined up as a replacement for Hulse?
