Southend United manager Steve Tilson has criticised the decision to increase the number of substitutes that can be named for Football League matches.
The League is to raise the number of players on the bench from five to seven, although only three can be used.
Tilson told BBC Essex he thought the ruling was "absolutely crazy".
"It's not really helping anyone. I don't understand why they've done it. If five subs aren't enough there's something wrong," he said.
"Times are hard for every business and football is no different, so clubs are having smaller squads," added the Shrimpers boss.
"If you can't bring three subs out of five then there's something wrong, so for me I don't see any point in it."Most clubs have the players not named in the 16, in the stands, and it doesn't cost much more at all to have two more players simply sat on the bench. The only thing it does is give the manager more options when deciding who to bring on, it's not like they get an appearance fee for being sat on the bench.

We proposed it and it was approved by the rest of the chairmen - blame yourselves! I can't see the problem myself.

I think it's a great idea, as it allows you to put inexperienced youngsters on the bench, who you might not usually put on the bench if you have 5 subs - as it's a risk. 7 subs allows you to do this and can even bring them on if you're winning comfortably.
