He says the competition is wide open...
Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso has once again reiterated the club's stance on what the main objective is for the season by stating that the UEFA Champions League is the primary target for Los Merengues this season.
The final next May is at the Bernabeu and Madrid are looking to secure the trophy for the tenth time in their history and the first time since 2002, but Alonso knows there are other contenders.
"There is still a long way to go but it would be great to be able to stamp our authority in the Champions League. Obviously there is a long way to go, but is a priority goal for this season," he told Marca.
"Real Madrid is hopeful. There are a bunch of teams that can claim the title, but it is quite open."
Alonso also said that he hopes the Blancos can still perform against Real Valladolid this weekend, despite some notable absentees from the squad through injury.
"Hopefully they [injuries] are not going to be noticed, that is why we have other players."[/quote]

Great goal from Higuain. ;D What I'd like to know is the GPG of these legends v Raul and not forgetting when they played La Liga was weaker and that Franco was always giving them a helping hand.

Yeah, Hig's goal was sheer class, he is going to get better too. I'd like to see those stats too, if someone could get them!

Villareal were unlucky. They created several good chances and failed to convert any. The defending for the first was comical and the second was a clear hand ball for the assist. Cata Diaz (another Maradona favourite ) had a great assist as well this weekend for the opposition.
