Derby County have been dealt another injury blow with the news that Steve Davies has been ruled out for the rest of the season.
Davies (pictured) is to undergo surgery tomorrow on a stress fracture of a metatarsal in his right foot and will miss the last eight matches as Derby look to secure safety in the Championship.
He is the fourth Rams player to have his season ended early and the third with a foot injury.
The others are Paul Green (foot), Miles Addison (foot) and Dean Leacock (groin).
Davies, who has started five of the last seven games, will have the same operation as Green underwent earlier this month.
He will have a screw inserted in his fractured metatarsal to help the bone heal more quickly. The operation will take place at Wrightington Hospital, near Wigan.
“It’s another injury problem we could well do without and is a bitter shame as Steve was just starting to get some regular first team football under his belt, which we believe he was benefiting from,” said manager Nigel Clough.
“He will have his op and then need to concentrate hard on getting himself right for the start of pre-season training; just like Miles Addison and Paul Green, who have had similar injuries.”
Davies has been blighted by injuries since signing from Tranmere Rovers in the summer.
The 21-year-old suffered a fractured eye socket and cheekbone in October and then needed a hernia operation.
He returned briefly before being sidelined with a groin strain and also sat out the recent victory over Bristol City because of an infected big toe.
The injury problems have restricted him to only 11 starts this season.
Of the 37 players used by Derby this season, 18 are currently unavailable to due to various reasons.
Davies, Green, Addison, Leacock, Kris Commons, Chris Porter, Jay McEveley, Jordan Stewart and Ruben Zadkovich are injured.
Tyrone Mears, Claude Davis, Luke Varney and Giles Barnes are out on loan while Alan Stubbs, Andrey Pereplotkins, Darren Powell, James Tomkins and Mo Camara are no longer at the club.
Clough is hoping Commons, Porter, McEveley and Stewart can shake off their injuries in time for the next game against Burnley at Pride Park Stadium on April 4.
