Ok in my view we were ONLY in with a chance still of reaching the play-offs IF we beat Burnley, which transpired into a 1-1 draw.
Shame we've only just signed Gio, imagine what could have happened had he come in January !
This season for me has been somewhat disappointing. After finishing 8th, one point off the play offs I was confident we'd push on this season. There seemed to be a firm base, with the signings having had time to bed in ( 3 Cm's in Jan 08 was STILL a mistake in my eyes ! )
Also we had a very impressive home record last season, so that did give reason for optimism. I was confident the away form would be eradicated too
Summer 08 was wasteful for me though. We BADLY needed a quality left winger, did that arrive ? NO !
McAuley was a necessary signing, as De Vos had retired. Pim came due to our scouting network being expanded, along with Richy Wright on a free, + Kevin Lisbie.
Lisbie to me looked a handy buy. On the face of it, we also needed a quality CF to guarantee 15 goals minimum. He scored 17 for bottom of the league Col U, so you couldn't argue with that really !
However, for our new found wealth, had we REALLY added enough in the summer to guarantee play offs ??
Ivan Campo arrived soon after, which to me on paper looked a great signing. Would offer experience to young players, should help shore up the defence. However he arrived with lack of fitness, which ruined his first half of the season !
Thatcher / Volz arrived to help our wing back problems ( especially LB ) Hardings pretty poor, n Matt Richards is very much out the picture !
Neither to be honest have set the world on fire ! Volz to me looked a good loan signing, but somewhat overweight n suspect defensively. Glad its only a loan deal !
Alan Lee was sold early into the season for around half a mill !? Sorry to see him go, and did question this as Counago / Lisbie aren't the largest
A poor start to the season was in store, 1-0 up at home to Preston ( with Lisbie scoring after 2 mins ! ) becoming a 2-1 loss. Fortress Portman Road, who are we kidding !
Magilton used all sorts of midfield combinations early season, playing all sorts of variations. Quinn / Norris were given the job of sorting out LM, which neither really are designed to do !
Upfront we were clearly lacking a "Darren Bent" or someone who really knows where the net is.
Our away form steadily became useful, although points galore were being dropped at home !
I don't attend home games due to living in Bristol, but many fans weren't happy with our performances
Stead arrived on loan, scoring on debut vs Reading. He was promptly signed permanently after one game ! Has this ever happened before in footy history !? To be fair to the lad, he's done quite well
However we were looking rather unbalanced in the majority of games. LM REALLY was proving a nightmare, together with our lack of a natural scorer.
Civelli arrived a month away from fitness, and has impressed in the back end of this season.
Giovanni Dos Santos - How on earth did we end up with him !? - Jon Gorman our coach has Spurs links - so maybe that
Yeah I've missed out great chunks of the season, and it's a very brief summary - Luckily I can edit at a later date ! ( beauty of this website ! )
Is Magilton the man to take us to the promised land !? Probably not. Did a better job with limited resources, then to me has appeared rather wasteful with the money provided.
Luckily due to Marcus Evan's financial backing we SHOULD be able to invest money again this summer. I think 09/10 will be under a new manager, partially due to season ticket sales probably being very low so far ( the club haven't revealed figures sold )
That brings me onto Norwich City - Involved in a relegated battle, in a financial mess, and with the economic climate at the minute, have ALREADY sold 17,000 tickets for next season! Incredible, respect where its due !
So, in conclusion, how do I think we'll do next season ?
Well, we still need a quality CF, that we're somewhat short of ! Looking forward to seeing more of Civelli ( and a speedy recovery !)
I'd be happy if Lisbie / Bowditch / Billy Clarke / Sumalakovski all found new clubs. I don't think any will get us into the prem !
But I feel the new boss will spend more wisely than Magilton ( who hasn't disgraced himself in his first managerial job ) that will guarantee we finish in the top 6
Looking forward to next season already ! Really feel it will be a good campaign.
