A report in the French media suggests that many of European football’s elite clubs are ready to set up a championship of their own. UEFA is willing to listen to their proposals
France Football has revealed that Europe’s top clubs are ready to break away and form an elite three-tiered ‘Super-Championship’, which would usurp the Champions League in importance. The publication suggests that the plans have been prepared in secret by some of the heavyweights of the game.
The report details previous plans of such projects, outlining the proposals of G14, a group of 18 (although it was initially 14) of the top sides on the continent, who were involved in a previous scheme that was very similar in thinking. The organisation has since been absolved and replaced by the European Club Association (ECA), which boasts over 100 members, and it is this group who are behind the proposals.
The ECA are concerned by the recent financial problems, which are starting to hit some of Europe’s top clubs, and have formed this proposal as an idea to generate more wealth for the clubs in “crisis”.
France Football suggests that these clubs are willing to work with UEFA in order to get plans off the grounds, as opposed to acting as a rebel group, as G14 were supposed to have done.
“UEFA is a democratic organisation,” Michel Platini, president of UEFA explained when quizzed about his reactions to the proposals. “We will listen to everyone and we will seek the view of all stakeholders. And then, when the time comes, it will be up to the executive committee to decide.”
If such a project is to take-off - the dossier compiled suggests it could be as soon as season 2012-13 - it would dramatically change the European footballing landscape because this league could have as many as 38 or 42 fixtures per season, obliterating any chance of a domestic calendar for the elite teams.[/quote]
