Cannot believe i went to this fixture !
I thought on friday " y not ! " so saturday set off on my drive to Preston
EASIEST journey ever, its around 2 miles from the motorway, and signposted very clearly. Coupled with free parking near the ground, simple things like this please me !
The city centre is an absolute dump though, it really is. Also, it seems to be more Muslim than Indonesia, I didn't realise what Preston was like culture wise.
Now i wasn't too confident before the game. We haven't beat Preston at Deepdale in the league since 1966 ( albeit not that many fixtures )
I decided to bet on Tommy Miller to score a goal also, as he ALWAYS scores against Preston NE. I wasn't sure whether to do anytime, or first scorer, but in the end plumped for last goal scorer ( 16-1 ! )
Deepdale is a very well finished ground. Finally, they have a fourth stand, which really does make the ground. Went into the football museum before the game aswell, which is a very welcome addition. Deepdale isn't a bowl like many grounds sadly are, and although modern keeps a sense of traditionalism. For me this is a huge thumbs up !
Onto the game...
Now I said to my friend " we've gone 1-0 down within the first 2/3 minutes away at QPR / Swansea, all I want early on is 0-0 " ... to which annoyingly, I was proved right in the fact Preston were awared a pen. Now it was slightly dubious, although their player did well to get goal side of Bruce, who should have cleared long before the ball got into the box.
1-0 Preston, which added to my record of NEVER seeing us draw a 0-0 game! How would we respond ? !
Very well ! We started passing the ball around rather well. Preston seemed insistent on hoofting the ball long, though they did get their penalty from this, so all credit to them. That said, their right winger was very lively, and was playing good footy.
1-1 Miller ( knew he'd score !!! ) After gradually getting back into the game, we deservedly equalised. A handy move developed, with Civelli ( width on the left at last !! ) putting a ball that maybe Preston should have dealt with better !
The Preston fans were all of a suden more quiet than before ! Which took some doing, this place was worse than Birmingham + Watford for noise, which I really didn't understand...
We were now in control of the game. Actually playing some good footy, and looking balanced. That said, Preston were 5th with one of the best home records in the league, so theres always the danger they could score. Which they did.... step forwards Richy Wright ! How on earth he messed up only the man upstairs will know, but going in 2-1 down at half time left us licking our wounds
It had been an entertaining first half, although we were losing, we were playing good football. No complaints for our general play, but defensive errors ( as in the Joe Royle days ) were costing us dearly.
But our general play was a hell of a lot better than general tosh ive witnessed under Magilton, so I wasn't too discouraged. I did know the next goal, really would be key to the match however
We started the 2nd half much better than the first, pinning Preston back for long spells, and again passing the ball around briskly. But again, a sucker punch arrived from a corner. Awful marking, which I watched with a grimace on my face again on the Championship this morning- David Wright of all people !
3-1 Preston - game over ??!
Possibly - However a Tommy Miller free kick a minute or so later, again gave us hope. ( I was convinced he'd score )
3-2 Preston, 25 minutes to save ourselves + our season ??!
John Stead ( quite ineffective but with commitment ) replaced by Kevin Lisbie shortly after. Now for me I didn't understand how this would help matters, but Lisbie played rather well ! Hit the post with a shot, however if it had gone in the Preston keeper would have been slated I feel !
We kept going to the end, but Preston duly saw the game out. For much of our good play, not too much was created. Why was Walters sub out of interest !? We're a far better side with him in + fit ( Should start vs Saints..? )
In the end, our season definitely isn't over due to other results.
4 points from the play offs.... interesting. Yes other sides have games in hand, but at this stage of the season you'd take the points all day long.
People will moan about Magilton etc ... diff players on forums. One guy behind was moaning about Miller all game, even at 1-1 calling him shit. I said " u weren't calling him shit when u scored mate, u were celebrating " which lead to quite abit of conflict between myself and this " supporter ". After the free kick i just said " u gonna slate Miller again are u ? call urself an Ipswich fan " and he shut up ! av it ! things like that infuriate me, the fickleness of football supporters....
Tuesday vs Saints is massive, come on lads, play like that every week, cut out the mistakes, we will honestly make the play offs. But are we capable of doing that !? Its the crunch time, and time to stand up + be counted
