Timmy Mallet could have made a better choice at scrum half as Italy gifted a terrible terrible England team a 36-11 win.
Precious little invention, direct running and endless kickig away of posession.
Had the Azzurri actually gone with a scrum half Tonioalatti from te get go this could have been different. Mauromasco was terrible from the start his mistakes gifted some 20 odd points. Very prescient from Neko.
But the coach has to take the blame.
Mallet has done little to advance the Azzurri in his tenure as coach . Johnson in his turn has an awful lot to do. Croft and Tait left on the bench ,two of the most talented players available.
Parisse was immense again truly world class.
Ireland beat pre tourney favourites France with O'Driscoll scoring with a superb scything run of old and his ex centre partner D'Aercy adding one of his own after Heaslip showing a nice turn of pace and cheeky sidestep crossed for Ireland in the first half.
Harinordoquy scored a superb first in typical Gallic fashion, and Medard (the wolfman) added a second collecting a precise chip kick from Beauxis.
Leaves the tourney wide open. I would not be surprised to see England finish fifth overall. Scotland have gathered a good group under Hadden with some ne young starlets ie Euan Murray and Tom Evans.
In WC2011 qualification Russia beat Portugual 19-16 , Georgia overcame a spirited Germany at Heidleberg 38-5 and Rumania slipped passed Spain 19-11.
Has to be said the Oaks team was bereft of several first choice players not released by their French clubs.
Union in Russia is being supported heavily and Russia expects to be a contender in 10-20 years time.
