I think even England's weakened squad is stronger than Germany's, but we're bound to be outplayed anyway

Germany are much better than England. They are ranked second in the world and always do well in tournaments. We are average when our best team is out let alone the reserves. We will be out classed, out fought, out muscled and out scored by a German team who will teach us a lesson.

Indeed. Neither team will gain points for winning the game.

I disagree. For the England team to perform as a team, they need time together as a team - not just training, but playing matches too. Can you honestly say we'd be better off just throwing all the players into competitive matches without giving them any practice together? The game's value has been reduced somewhat in that regard by the masses of injuries, but no-one can be blamed for that - on paper, I'd argue it was a good idea, and it remains so. It's giving Capello a chance to look at the fringe players too, at least - hopefully it'll just confirm for him that Downing isn't up to international standard ;D (Let's face it, that alone would make the game worthwhile!)

even if Downing isn't up to International standard, he's still the only REAL left sided midfield, who is English, of any significance.

Joe Cole's never had a problem playing there, and I really find it hard to believe that there's not another high-quality English left winger in the land. Besides, you say 'of significance' - sometimes obscurity is the best place to pluck a star from! ;D It can't hurt to try someone else anyway, especially in a friendly (see the value of the game there, again?) - if it ain't broke, don't fix it, but if it is broke, get someone on it fucking sharpish. And Downing is definitely a broken leftie, when it comes to England games. He's had a fair few chances, and has disappointed every time.

Cole doesn't have a problem in so much as he gives his all; unlike alot of England players, generally plays up to his ability; unlike alot of England players and as such you can never question his performances; unlike alot of England players, but he's never a left sided midfielder. He always has to cut inside due to his lack of a left foot - against ok teams this doesn't matter, but against the better teams of the world.... i disagree with you about Downing. He's a proper winger, who can take on players and can cross the ball well.... hopeful he's given a chance, cos i think he'll come good.

At club level, yes, I agree in full. Every time I've seen him play for England, though, he's not shown any of that club form. I don't know if it's nerves or what, but he's just not been up to scratch. If Capello gives him a chance, I really do hope he rises up and performs like the other squad members have begun to, because if he could take his club form to international level, he'll be a very useful player. He'll need more than one game to win me over though - a swallow does not a summer make, or something like that!

Half of the first choice eleven missing = pointless game. If Capello wants to look at some fringe players then why not take all the under 21 squad? - (no, thats no good - not enough advertising revenue for ITV) - See if they are ready to make the step up. The game was organised between the two nations purely for commercial reasons. Its a money maker for the FA.
