Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva has become the ninth Liverpool player in just a year and a half to fall victim to robbery, with a number of personal items taken from his Woolton home...
Lucas returned home after the Reds' Champions League draw with Atlético Madrid midweek to find his home had been visited by thieves, who had made off with a number of personal items.
Among the plundered booty was Lucas' Olympic bronze medal which was earned only three months ago.
Also taken was a quantity of football memorabilia, including shirts of the Liverpool and Brazil teams.
A Merseyside police spokesperson confirmed that an investigation was underway, officers had been to the address and that door-to-door enquiries were conducted.
Acting Detective Chief Inspector Peter Parry told the press: "I would like to empathise to Mr Leiva and his partner for what must have been an upsetting experience.
"As with every burglary victim, we will be carrying out a thorough investigation and offering them crime prevention advice.
"Taken from the address was an amount of jewellery and some very distinctive football and sports memorabilia.
"These items have significant personal importance to Mr Leiva and they were associated with some very cherished memories. I'd ask members of the public to be on the look out in case they are offered such items for sale either on the street or in pubs or see the items for sale on the internet."
The robbery at the Woolton address marks the ninth occasion that a Liverpool player has had his home invaded in just 18 months.
Captain Steven Gerrard, Dirk Kuyt, Pepe Reina, Robbie Keane and Daniel Agger are those among the current squad who have had their homes raided by criminals while Peter Crouch, Florent Sinama-Pongolle and Jerzy Dudek were also robbed during their time on Merseyside.
