Mafia film The Godfather has been named the greatest movie of all-time in a poll of over 10,000 cinema-goers, film-makers and critics. The 1972 Francis Ford Coppola film, starring Marlon Brando and Al Pacino, headed Empire magazine's top 500 poll.
Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Empire Strikes Back came second and third, with The Shawshank Redemption and Jaws following behind. Directors including Quentin Tarantino and Mike Leigh took part in the poll.
Goodfellas, Apocalypse Now, Singin' in the Rain, Pulp Fiction and Fight Club made up the rest of the top 10.
The latest Batman film, The Dark Knight, was the only 21st Century film to make the top 20, and all three instalments of the The Lord of the Rings trilogy secured top 60 spots.
There were some surprises in the top 500 however, with classics such as Easy Rider, The Sound of Music and Oscar winner Shakespeare in Love not making the list.
Only two British films made the top 100 - A Clockwork Orange at number 37 and Casino Royale at 56. Goldfinger was the only other James Bond film to feature in the list. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban was also the only film of its franchise to get into the top 500, at 471.
In total, 10,000 cinema-goers, 150 Hollywood directors and 50 film critics had their say in the poll. Hmmm.....no 'Easy Rider' or 'Sound Of Music' in the top 500?!?! ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) Then again, on the positive side of things at least some perspective's been applied to the Harry Potter franchise. Here's a link for the entire list.... www.empireonline.com/500/80.aspI'll be scouring the list for any viewing tips in the near future! ;D

Why do we need yet another list of the same people telling us what the greatest movies are of all time in their opinion. It's all subjective so......there. ;D

There are 100 different covers... I am stupid and couldn't decide between the Rocky one and the Shawshank Redemption one so I bought both ![:-[](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/embarrassed.png) That's a few pints less tomorrow then.

That's admirable work! I have all 4 covers from The Two Towers and The Matrix Reloaded - I hadn't seen the film at that stage! ;D Don't want to risk undermining you on this one but I rather like the one I have...... ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png)

Nice! Do you get that one as a subscriber?
I have bought my mate the Withnail and I cover for Christmas as it's one of his favourites, he never buys magazines so I'm not worried he will get it!

It was good to see Dead Man's Shoes in there, albeit in a lowly 460th or something.

Yes, it's the subscriber ones, they do tend to be the best. It was the same when 40 or 50 Star Wars covers were done, the subsriber cover had a white border and a group photo of the rebellion's main players. Not really had a proper look yet, but there looks to be a lot of very dubious placements, especially outside the top 100, and some unbelievable ommissions too. I'll comment/moan further once I've had a proper look. ;D

I watched the Shawshank Redemption a couple of months ago, it was a good film, but think I ruined the moment by asking how he knew where and what beach to find the other bloke on at the end of the film.... just ask ArgyleNeil - he just despaired!!
