my views as i went !
Travelled down from Bristol, as thats where i live. Took my friend Will with me from work, who had it in his head Jon Stead would score. We both found it amusing enough that he had vs Reading.
Left my house for 5,,, for a 7.45 k / o . Should have been plenty time, but arrived in Southampton for 7.20 ! Luckily found a free car parking space, which was brilliant ! Got a programme, and walked over to Saint Mary's (4th consecutive visit, having previously witnessed a win / draw / loss )
Before the game i thought it would be a draw. I told myself Saints couldn't lose again, having lost 4 out of 5. Had also been told by many ( the programme backed them up on this ) that Saints had played very well away at QPR, despite the 4-1 scoreline.
However - had a bet, n went for Ipswich 2-1, with Walters to open the scoring. I really don't understand y i do scorecasts, what chances do u have of them coming in !?
Anyway, got into my seat intime for kick off. Had a look at the Saints players i recognised, and the teams were announced. Remembered Surman being a good player, and knew all about Stern John. Was slightly annoyed Miller was in the line up, but hey ho !
Game started at quite a frantic pace, Saints the better of the two sides early on. Surman scored an accurate shot from distance to put them 1 goal to the good, but i must question Richy Wright for the goal ! Looked a speculative shot, but fair play to the lad. No idea why he's played at left back either !!! clearly a classy winger
A few minutes after, Ipswich moved to a 4-5-1, with Walters playing on the right. I pointed out to my friend this was his better position, n told him to watch out for plenty headers won on that wing - i wasn't wrong, would fancy him to against Maldini of old !
Saints appeared very reserected by the goal, and were bossing the game. We were appearing slightly clueless, until we scored from in view, sorta out the blue ! Never mind tho, ur not gonna be annoyed with a goal for ur side. Credit to Garvan for getting forwards, often our CM DON'T get forward enough. Rest of the half, i thought we played the better football. Stead in particular causing carnage for the Saints backline.
Onto the 2nd half - wasn't sure which way it was going to end up, but thought whoever scored the next WOULDN'T lose.
very pleased therefore that Quinny sent us 2-1 up just into the 2nd half ! Good boy haha
from then on, we really did play quite good football, and didn't really appear in any trouble - well that was Will's view. I shared the " us in control " BUT - us being Ipswich, u know theres some awful defending, a goal we could gift the other side at any moment. Duly, it came !
Rest of the game went quite quickly, both sides had chances to win. Apparently a Stead offside goal was onside,,,, hey ho, get some don't get others. Way the cookie crumbles !
Overall despite some people thinking we deserved the points, i think a draw was about right. We didn't create an awful lot despite dominating a lot of possession, and also territory.
Very pleased with Jon Stead's workrate upfront. Gives u the option, unsettles defenders - like Lee of old.
When Counago / Lisbie came on,,, i thought " yes we're going for it " but both weren't great. Lisbie especially was bloody awful, got caught offside 3 times in 5 minutes. Neither of them moved much, and gave the Saints defence far too much time on the ball
