www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/football/premier_league/manchester_united/article4504210.eceThis surely sets another worrying precedent. Over the top compensation. As the article points out very few players from an Academy even the Manchester United one make the first team. These sort of things happen in football. It was not a malicious challenge by all accounts (say unlike Keanes on Haaland) just an unfortunate accident. You can just see the sordid ambulance chases (another disastroud import of Yank trash culture) going to clubs around the country to offer their services. Most clubs & certainly their insurers lower down the leagues could not afford this sort of payout. It would bankrupt them. It seems in matters of compensation regardless of the cause of injuries ,too often the payouts are now going the American way in being completely out of proportion. Remember the lady in Ohio who won $20M for spilling a hot cup of coffee on her lap ?

The tackle was high, over the top of the ball and broke his leg in two places - you telling me it was not 'malicious'?? Then why did the player responsible accept liability?

fair comment, but the law system is going a little crazy dont you think? Possibly, but this kid had his career wrecked - he was about to be offered a pro contract at United so i'm in no doubt he should have got something. It says in the article that the average league 2 wage is £1000 a week so its tough to predict how much he may have earned had he played on??

In that case no player should bother going in for challenges at all , just incase they mistime their tackle & it results in a player suffering a serious injury.
At this rate players such as John Eustace might not be signed by anyone just in case because of their tough tackling they might end up costing a club dearly in insurance payments.
And about the leg being broken. An innocuous challenge can result in a fracture simp,y due to some inherent weakness in the structure of the bone.
Will we extend the payments to these too ? When & where would it end ?
Fair enough he should receive some compensation. But £4.2M for an untested player ? There have been plenty of palyers from Carrington like Tipton, Pilkington , Beardsmore tipped for greatness who have not amounted to much.

TYPICAL british attitude trying to blame ALL your legal system problems on us Americans. What does a dude who had joined the club as a nine-year-old, was 18 and making his debut for the reserve team, have to do with us my bray. We ALL know that no American players are good enough at 9 to play for your club systems. ;D

the british legal system actually deliberately makes judgements to prevent an american, sue everyone for anything, style system, as judges are often very specific in their reasoning for success compensation claims..... hence why for 20 odd years or more people have been saying "we're heading towards an american style system of compensating everything" yet its still not happened....
