All Or Nothing[/u]
A typically dour Mike Leigh film telling the story of a bunch of people in South London with miserable lives. There is a glimpse of light at the end, but I couldn't really warm to this film despite steady performances from the likes of Timothy Spall and 'Gavin and Stacey's James Corden.

Seen a double-bill of Mike Leigh films this week; 'Happy-Go-Lucky' was pretty good but 'Naked' was as grim as hell. Think I need to detox before moving on to that one. Still not seen anything that's in the same class as 'Secrets & Lies' yet.

Dirty Harry
The first, iconic outing for Clint Eastwood's iconic, anti heroic San Fran hardman. Twists and turns a plenty, plus that quote.
Top stuff.

A little more distinguished than merely yelling "You yer c*nt!!" too!! ;D Oh my God, my every celluloid dream has come true! The Godfather films, completely restored and remastered are being released on Blu-Ray next month!! ;D

Was a little surprised to see the recent Coppolla restorations set downgraded to a '15'. It does seem a little strange as I've just bought 'Bonnie & Clyde' which is still rated '18', but the most violent scene in that is the final one where they're shot outside their car.......isn't Sonny's death very similar in tone? Never mind the horse's head, Michael's first kill etc, etc, etc..... The Blu-Ray set is marked as 'yet to be rated' on Play.com, though Zavvi show an '18' certificate....though that could just be assumed.

'Be Kind Rewind'
And after 10 minutes or so, I nearly did. A film that promised so much was threatening to become one of those pretentious, arty, inide films that ultimately fail me as a viewer.
Then, I started to get into it and nearly two hours later I was sitting in the dark teary eyed at one of the best feel good films I have seen in many a year.
Danny Glover runs a beat up old video hire shop in a modern US city with his adopted son Mos Def. They have a regular clientele of kindly customers, including the nerdish Jack Black. The local authorities issue DG with a compulsory purchase order unless they can hit certain sales targets within 60 days. DG leaves MD in charge one day while he attends a Fats Waller convention (this will make sense if you watch) and in a quite, ridiculous fashion JB erases all the tapes. This is the point where I realised the film was meant to be taken more as a modern take on the Capra-esque philosophy of story telling.
What ensues next is a hilarious attempt to convince the customers they are still in business by filming their own versions of such classics as Robocop, The Lion King and most memorably Ghostbusters.
This is a film that rewards the initial patience of the viewer as it progessively builds into a warm hearted fairy tale about the strength of community. It's offbeat but never too far off the track, and it really did strike a lot of chords with me. The climax is utterly fantastic too.
Brilliant!

The Notebook.
Gorgeous. Very girly. Heart breaking. Beautifully shot- especially the scene where the two protagonists are in a boat on a lake and are surrounded by lots of geese! I cried a lot!
