Looks to be a pretty uninspiring list in truth. I was a bit surprised that Duffy didn't get shortlisted, even more so when the performing whale (a.k.a. Adele) has somehow received a nod!
Adele - 19 British Sea Power - Do You Like Rock Music? Burial - Untrue Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid Estelle - Shine Laura Marling - Alas I Cannot Swim Neon Neon - Stainless Style Portico Quartet - Knee-Deep in the North Sea Rachel Unthank & The Winterset - The Bairns Radiohead - In Rainbows Robert Plant & Alison Krauss - Raising Sand The Last Shadow Puppets - The Age of the Understatement
My first thoughts were that I wanted Laura Marling to win it, her debut album is terrific. However, after reading through the nominees I discovered that Neon Neon are a Gruff Rhys side project, and having watched a couple of vids on Youtube I've ordered the album, so I'll reserve judgement for a couple of weeks.

I think Last Shadow Puppets will win it. Alex Turner is a Mercury favourite.

As long as Robert Plant doesn't win. Seriously that album is a load of Radio 2 pants. However it's got into the album of the year list I have no idea.

It is part of the Mercury statute that the final list of nominees should include.... * One populist, mega-selling, bland as hell, manufactured talent. * One jungle/drum 'n' bass/incoherent 50000bpm Roni Size/Goldie type act. * One old fucker who's enjoying an indian summer, purely as some middle-aged dad's have been inspired to put 'Bat Out Of Hell' back on the shelves having heard some twat on Radio 2 eulogising. * One folk act who even people on the folk scene, or indeed band members themselves have never heard of. So don't be mad, tis an obligation you see!

Marling gets my vote. Although if she doesn't, I wouldn't mind Burial or Elbow getting it.

I've had a quick listen and I'd give it to Elbow ..... I could give to Radiohead. What the hell is Portico Quartet all about ........ does jazz still have any place in a polite, modern society!!

I only like the Mercurys because now and again they reward originality and brilliance. Burial is justifiably favourite this time round as it is an immense album, imo.
If Burial wins this, it will restore my faith in talented artists who aren't afraid to experiment being recognised for pushing new sounds. No way will he be there to pick it up tho!
Why are Radiohead in there?? They hardly need the exposure. And Dizzee Rascal..what?
