My question is...................................WHY? Football has the world cup amd many other major internationl and domestic tournaments. It should not be in the Olympics, it's just devaluing the game. Also clubs have to lose yet more players to tournaments that clash with the domestic season.

Because it's a sport. I'd rather see football played at the Olympics than BMXing!

It should be for amateur footballers only IMO.

One the one side, I can see Cav's point - there's plenty other opportunities for glory in football; perhaps the Olympics too is overkill.
On the other hand, though, football is still a sport and the players are still sportsmen (allegedly) - why should they be prevented from competing for an Olympic gold medal just because their chosen sport is so successful outside of the Olympics?

its an under 23 tournament
and before you shoot your mouth off cav (again) if you did your research you'd notice that football at the olympics has been going on for a hell of a lot longer than the World cup has existed

Olympic football was in the first olympiad in 1896, its only womens football that was introduced recently. Where as the FIFA World Cup only started in 1930. So the olympics were actually largely considered the original world cup.
