Write about your favourite/shit moments this season.
This season was bizzare, very bizzare. I had high expectations and then saw our team play, my expectations dropped dramatically.
Losing to Crystal Palace 4-1 at home on the first day of the season didn't set us up well at all... average striker James Scrowcroft scored a hat-trick against us which clearly showed the need for defenders...
George Burley failed to solve this problem and worse the season got... Kenwyne Jones went on strike... not only a team with a weak defence but we lost our best striker too... we then lost to peterbrough in the carling cup, embarrasing stuff.
This started to get better, we managed excellent 3-2 home wins against Stoke and West Brom, at last something to smile about. We went to QPR away at the best possible time really, Ray Jones had just passed away (r.i.p) and Qpr were left reeling - we won 3-0.
I feel Watford away was a key match in what summed up our season, Gzregorz Rasiak and Nathan Dyer scored excellent goals and we lead 2-1 with 8 minutes remaining - we lost 3-2 and from then on our incosistancies told!
win - lose - draw - lose - win -lose - draw - lose - win etc etc etc This was Burleys fault, we had a shite defence and an unfit team playing to no tactics. This was summed up perfectly when we lost 5-1 away at preston... I bunked the afternoon off college for this evening match and went on the 11 hour round journey to see our team embarased... more so than against crystal palace and AGAIN average strikers scored against us our very weak defence.. Karl Hawley... Patrick Ageymang... FFS.
We conceded late goals in this game, which told of teams unfit nature... George Burley... what a royal wanker, as went on to lose games in the last minute alot... Saints 2-3 Barnsley (Devaney 90), Saints 0-1 Charlton (Iwelumo 90), Saints 0-1 Preston (Neal 90).
We had brief good moments, winning away at Sheff utd and Leicester 2-1 in both games and winning at home 4-0 to Hull, with a stern John Hat-trick.
But again we were far too incosistant and again just far too crap! Sheffield wednesday 5-0 saints, summed up our defensive incapabilites as we were torn apart by yet another average team with an average strikeforce... Akpo Sodje FFS... it's not even funny.
Incosistancy continued and January screwed us up the most... Burley leaves to join Scotland - hooray, whilst excellent news... our failure to replace burley quickly was further to our downfall! Our financial worries worsened and we were forced to loan out Rasiak and Skacel to get them off the wage bill.
Dodd and Gorman took temporary charge, which was an awful decision, and players confidence dropped to a new low. losing to bristol rovers in the fa cup summed up their reign
Pearson took over and we started to improve, but it was almost too late. Under this manager we had new found believe, new drive, better fitness, decent tactics, all the things burley didn't have!
This was summed up by gritty away draws at Scunthorpe, Blackpool, Wolves (jason euell 90th minute equaliser, what a moment ;D ).
Stern John, meanwhile continued to tuck away goals and important ones at that, no less so than beating leicester 1-0.
again defensive incapabilities showed from the Burley era, as we lost 5-0 at hull, and things were still looking bleak.
We won 2-0 at home to Bristol City with an excellent display, fans were jubilant, this was followed by another battling away point.
Losing 1-0 to burnley meant it was looking hard to stay up though and out of our own hands, but we went to west brom and defended excellently, this was a day i'll never forget as we showed we could battle and i was proud of my team for once, Adam Lallana scored and I went mental.
and so the last day came about, we won 3-2 at home to sheff utd, and we were safe, somehow. Stern John our hero, the relief was undescribable.
A mixture of George Burley and backroom failures (with finance and replacing burley too slowly) were the reason for our poor season.
Favourite home game: Bristol City/ Sheff utd - amazing celebrations.
Favourite away game: West Brom - LALLANA ;D Wolves - Euell ;D Qpr - singing for Ray jones
Goal of the season - Stern John vs Stoke away/hull home.
