Just been on the news as the 'Special envoy to the middle east'. Is this the most stupid appointment ever? After waging two wars in the middle east- which we're still clearing up after- and as perhaps one of the most useless PM's on foreign policy ever after Chamberlain, Baldwin etc, why have we given him a challenging task in the most instable region on the planet?! It's insensitive and how can we expect countries to trust us whilst this foreign policy disaster is representing us? Is Gordon Brown just looking after his forerunner or is he daft enough to think it was a sensible decision? ![::)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/eyesroll.png)

Whilst I sort of agree with your point, he is only representing us in a very small kind of way and wasn't appointed to this position by Gordon Brown.
He is a Middle East envoy on behalf of a broad group of the UN, EU, US and Russia.

I obviously wasn't listening carefully enough ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) He's still lacking in credibility in the middle east though, so it can be considered at least a strange appointment.

Thats alright. ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) Yes, indeed it is. We'll have to see how it plays out but I think Bush had a big say in his appointment. On the plus side, I suppose you have to hope that his experience with Northern Ireland will help him with Israel-Palestine tensions.

Northern Ireland is just about the only decent thing Blair managed, so credit where it's due for that. I think Israel-Palestine will be a bit harder to solve than that though, far too many complicating factors.

Yes, its a huge challenge for the region and the world, and there are no real easy answers. He's only an envoy and a mediator though and I expect the power in what happens in this process lies elsewhere.
