I think you should buy a laptop that does the things you want it to do.

Depends exactly what you're after. Listing the above is all well and good, but how fast do you want it, how much storage space does it need, what sort of warranty do you want, do you require software with it etc?
If you just want a bog-standard laptop that'll get the job done, then I'd recommend ebay - my sister bought one from there which arrived yesterday, and is in fantastic working order. Very good price too.
If you want support, warranty etc etc, then you'll be better off going to a 'proper' seller. Be prepared to pay a lot more though.

I have a laptop and a desktop, and the only thing I'd say is that pound for pound laptops can't compare in terms of value. I tend to use my desktop for all my downloading and any over 'high performance requiring' tasks. I keep the laptop purely for surfing and minor word processing stuff. The laptop did only cost about £450 new from Dell, but the £600 desktop is still way superior, despite being 18 months older......oh and Windows Vista stinks!!

I'd take a desktop ahead of a laptop as my main item any day. Easier to upgrade and maintain and far less prone to issues like overheating. Massively cheaper too.
That said, laptops do have their merits, especially when you have a wireless network.
