Antivir and Spyware Doctor are free to download.
How the same problem with Norton, in a word - it's shite.

Have a looksee on here. AGV is the best free antivirus around I reckon and there are cleaners on here too that work quite well. Make sure you install the antivirus firt before the cleaner though.. No idea why but I was told that and mine seem to work fine now. www.filehippo.com/

Of those on the link to the spyware Sterland posted; Ad-aware, AVG, Spybot Search & Destroy & Spyware Blaster are the best ones imo.

does anyone know a programme that can do a "check up" on your computer? i.e. assess if there are any problems, and possibly fix them... I doubt there's one catch-all program that could do it, and almost certainly not for free. Any clue as to what the problem(s) you might be looking at are? Antivirus software aside, I also use a RAM monitor to keep everything ticking over smoothly and a Registry Mechanic to keep everything in there tidied up. I also tend to deal with a lot of other issues manually, but obviously the later isn't for everyone.
