Was a terrible thing to happen, and such a pity cos he was cultivating an all time classic mullet! Those Columbians are nuts though and i wouldnt want to be them after losing 5-0 against Paraguay last week!

Oh yeah My dad and I watched the whole of that World Cup when I was the grand old Age of 5. And I only remember 2 parts, Escobar scoring the own goal and the columbians going mental and Maradona running upto the camera and being a stonehead lol. Oh and of course the amazing Brazil team including Romario, Dunga etc god what quality and excitement

Own goal that gifted the American's qualification to the knock out rounds, makes me sad when I watch video's of Escobar sitting on his backside after he scored the OG, and 2 days later shot dead, totally outrageous and unecessary.

A great world cup, shame England failed to qualify, although the Republic of Ireland did us proud.

Any side with Dunga in it or managing it is/was hardly amazing to watch . Brazil were dreadfully 'lucky' again against the Dutch with two clearly offside goals given. But it was all overshadowed by the shooting of Escobar ordered by a disgruntled scumbag drug baron who had placed a large bet on the game.

I dont remember the offside goals. You cant deny that the Brazil '94 team just rolls off the tongue they were some of the greatest players

Mozza has it spot on. Aside from Romario & Bebeto the team has a distinct lack of flair.
Far more deserving would have been the 82 & 86 sides who had real style & panache. I was too young to see 82 barring repeats but I did saw a great in 86 France v Brazil.
Lazaroni the then Brazilian coacj effectively changed Brazils style of football to the rather dull interspersed with flashes of brilliance that we see now with attacking full backs withdrawn defensive midfielders & two rather isolated strikers a system which his disciple Dunga is carrying on.
Only problem is neutralising the full backs who create the play neutralises the system.

was the most boring brazilian side of all time...... if i remember rightly a lot of brazilians would rather have not played than play the style they did! the stars of the world cup were without doubt nigeria who just played 4 amazing games, before losing in extra time to italy.... who had baggio injured but still probably the best player in the tournament (and again injured in 98).. with stoichkov and brolin also staring! best memory for me is beating italy in giants stadium when about 50000 irish fans made it their own... as when the players said after ray houghton scored the smell of stale beer wafting down nearly knocked the players out! paul mcgrath defending and john aldridge telling the official to fuck off

RIP 1994 worst side of football! The whole tragic episode was made even more so for the bitter twist of irony that foreshadowed events. The USA actually bid for the 1986 tournament, when two years after making their successful bid, Colombia pulled out of the commitment. Amidst concerns over instability in the country, primarily over crime and drugs, the Colombian FA cited the cost of hosting the competition in terms of stadia, organisation and security to be to too prohibitive. After the Colombian withdrawal, the USA along with Canada and Mexico stepped in with bids. Now had FIFA stayed consistent with their philosophy of sharing the tournament around - instead of awarding the Mexicans a second World Cup in 16 years - then the 1994 tournament would have been elsewhere, and the events of that day would have never happened in the first place.

"The Argentine defender wants shooting for a mistake like that." (Alan Hansen — later that night, Colombia defender Andrés Escobar, who had conceded an own goal in an earlier match against the USA, was shot to death at a restaurant in his homeland)

"The Argentine defender wants shooting for a mistake like that." (Alan Hansen — later that night, Colombia defender Andrés Escobar, who had conceded an own goal in an earlier match against the USA, was shot to death at a restaurant in his homeland) I clearly remember Hansen making that comment, which elicited a flood of complaints to the BBC, the turn of phrase was not wrong, it was just the timing.
