Oldham 1993 - 9 points adrift with inferior goal difference. Won last three games and other results went for them
Portsmouth 2006 - Shite all season, Redknapp comes back and they embark on Champions League form. Stay up at Brum's expense
Wimbledon for the whole of the 90's

Bradford City 2000 - By the skin of their teeth. Arse fell out next season though and they've never looked back

What about Carlisle in 1999, when goalkeeper Jimmy Glass who was on loan from Swindon scored a wonder goal in injury time winner on the last day, keeping Carlisle up and relegating York I think to the non league?

Of course Mozza, that's possibly the ultimate. I was focussing at first on the top flight I must admit. I'll see if I can think of some lower league great escapes.
Am sure Newcastle narrowly avoided the 3rd division in 1992 (either 1 point or goal difference) before romping the league the next season

Also it was Scarborough who went down not York. To put things in stark perspective they will play in the Unibond Premier next season after being relegated from first the Conference then the Conference North in two seasons.

That is sad to see regarding Scarborough, as they were the first team to be promoted from the non league (when promotion and relegation came in) and Lincoln relegated to the conference in 1987.

Under a certain Neil Warnock ;D Then he bounced back and took Notts County into the promised land (the season before the Premier League was formed), in all fairness, I think he is good manager, plus a very colourful straight talking character, remember only last season Portsmouth wanted Neil Warnock, before Redknapp was re-appointed.

You ever hear the story about how he nearly got the Chelsea job in 1991?

You ever hear the story about how he nearly got the Chelsea job in 1991? Oh yes, I remember now, mind you Chelsea were very run of the mill then, and gave the job in the end to Ian Porterfield, who has not been seen since

Chelsea were pants, and to be honest despite their success in the modern game I still see them as a mediocre club. Also, I remember Leeds being very second rate (and indeed second division) for most of the 80s until their league title, but I guess it's to do with your era of watching football

Leeds struggled in the old division two for many years in the 19haties, however, they did come close to promotion circa 1987 and 1988, and finally made it in 1990, and nearly made the FA cup final in 1987, only to be squeezed out 2-1 by Coventry, despite Andy Ritchie putting Leeds ahead, would of been an interesting final Tottenham v Leeds, I believe Billy Bremner was in charge of the Leeds side during that era, but it took Wilkinson's magic to get them up in the big time, and in their second season they were champions and remained in the top flight until 2004, it's amazing what can happen in football, you can never be too sure.

Indeed, I can even remember relegation scraps for Tottenham in relatively recent years. Would be unthinkable to see you in the second division but very few clubs can consider themselves Premiership certs year in year out. Was it 2003 when you were only about 2 or 3 points away from the trapdoor by the final reckoning? I would love to have seen Villa go down in one of their occasional relegation battles mind

I would love to have seen Villa go down in one of their occasional relegation battles mind We had a struggle under Ardiles in 1993, but turned it round, and finished 15th, in 1998, we were 2nd bottom when Gerry Francis left, but a few good end of season results saw us reach 15th again, it was never close to the wire in the end, but it could of been if we failed to pick up those vital wins. I think Everton had the best escape of all, in 1994, they had to beat Wimbledon, and found themselves 2-0 down at half time, they were down, but turned it round and 3-2 and stayed up by the skin of their teeth.
