England coach Steve McClaren has called up striker Darren Bent to his squad for the Euro 2008 qualifier against Croatia at Wembley on Wednesday.
Bent has been drafted in after Michael Owen was ruled out with a thigh injury picked up in the friendly 1-0 victory in Austria on Friday.

Just so long as he doesn't play 4-5-1 with Crouch up front on his own, knowing that a draw is all we need from the game.

Went off injured for the U21s didn't he. Aye: England U21 2-0 Bulgaria U21 Bulgaria looked the better side in the first half but Gabriel Agbonlahor nodded in a James Milner cross after 40 minutes to put the home side in front. The lively Theo Walcott nodded wide and then spurned a chance to put England further ahead by seeing a shot saved. But Walcott did win a late penalty and Milner slotted it in for the win. Bulgaria will have felt aggrieved at going into the interval behind after they passed the ball with confidence with England struggling for possession. They almost equalised shortly after going behind but Leicester's 17-year-old left-back Joe Mattock, who became the second youngest player to ever represent England Under-21s, cleared off the line. Almost immediately, Valeri Domovchiyski was put through on goal only to badly scuff his shot after a good first touch. England changed formation after the break as defensive midfielder Fabrice Muamba came on for striker Matt Derbyshire and this helped the home side contain their visitors more easily. Aston Villa's Agbonlahor was worryingly injured late on when he fell awkwardly. Walcott was moved into the central striker role for Agbonlahor and wanted to take the spot-kick he earned after 81 minutes. He was not initially happy at being overruled as Milner calmly scored to secure a fifth win out of five for England in their qualifying campaign. BUT: Strikers boost England U21s hopes Strikers Theo Walcott and Gabriel Agbonlahor, who has a slight knee injury, are included in the squad. The pair were doubts as they were prospects for a call-up to the senior squad after Michael Owen got injured. But Darren Bent has instead been called up by England boss Steve McClaren leaving Walcott and Agbonlahor to help the Under-21s to a sixth straight win. "Hopefully we'll qualify and I think we have a great chance," said midfielder Craig Gardner.

;D Joe Mattock is a product of Leicester's (quite excellent ) youth system. He is a defender who has been playing left back and left wing back for us. A bit raw at the edges, but a decent prospect. Doesn't play too much because Sheehan is a better wingback in the 5-3-2 system. Didn't realise he was only 17 though! He cleared the ball off the line with a back heel which was pretty cool.

Mclaren will play for a draw. And I sincerely hope he gets it wrong, we lose and that instead of papering over the cracks, the whole bloody wall is taken back to the brickwork and re-plastered as a result...so to speak.

I know what you mean. If we didn't qualify the whole structure of English football would have to be assessed from the manager to the grassroots and production of players. If we qualify we'll bumble on and it'll be the same old story next summer. I just don't think I have it in the heart to hope we don't qualify, even if we scrape some boring 0-0. Its odd, we don't deserve to qualify, Scotland for example do. But in our very poor group we are definitely no worse than very mediocre Russia and Croatia sides.

Geo, I'm about to bestow the honour of a GfJ exalt on you fella...for several reasons: 1. I agree with what you say 2. I don't recall ever exalting you previously 3. I'm on the scotch and it seems like the right thing to do. ;D
